Man Utd Make £74m Bid for RB Leipzig Striker Sesko
Manchester United have made an official offer for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with the deal potentially worth up to 85m euros (£73.8m).
The proposed transfer includes a guaranteed payment of 75m euros (£65.2m), with add-ons taking the total to the £74m mark. The Red Devils are awaiting Leipzig’s response but are confident Sesko is open to a move to Old Trafford.
Newcastle Also in the Race
Newcastle United have submitted their own bid, believed to be around 80m euros (£69.5m), as both clubs battle for the highly sought-after Slovenian.
Manchester United’s offer is significant, particularly as reports had suggested they would only proceed once they knew Sesko was willing to join.
The club is also prepared to let Rasmus Hojlund leave in order to clear space for Sesko in the squad.
Why Sesko?
At 6ft 5in, Sesko is a commanding presence who combines size with speed and technical ability. Since joining Leipzig, he has scored 39 goals in 87 appearances, making him the highest-scoring player under 23 years old in Europe’s top five leagues.
-
Pace: Clocked at 35.7km/h, among the fastest strikers in the Bundesliga.
-
Aerial dominance: Best aerial success rate among strikers with 60+ duels.
-
Long-range threat: 23.1% of his goals last season came from outside the box.
-
Comparison: Often likened to Erling Haaland, partly due to their shared background at Red Bull Salzburg.
How Can United Afford Sesko?
Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously warning of financial strain, United have structured payments cleverly for recent signings like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo (£130m combined).
Additional funds have been freed up by:
-
Marcus Rashford’s £325,000-a-week wages being fully covered by his loan to Barcelona.
-
£5m compensation from Chelsea after pulling out of the Jadon Sancho deal.
-
More than £15m from sell-on clauses for Anthony Elanga, Alvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele.
What’s Next?
United believe they have submitted a competitive bid, but Leipzig could hold out for a higher fee given Newcastle’s interest. Sesko’s all-round game and rapid development make him one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, and both Premier League clubs see him as a long-term solution.
