Man Utd Eye Watkins and Sesko as Hojlund Struggles Continue
Manchester United have placed Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko on their striker shortlist amid concerns over Rasmus Hojlund’s form heading into the new season.
United boss Ruben Amorim has been vocal about the need for Premier League-proven additions and more competition up front after Hojlund, a £72m signing last summer, managed just 10 goals in 52 appearances last season and is yet to score in two pre-season games.
Transfer Dynamics
While United are keen, financial constraints mean they may need to sell fringe players like Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrrell Malacia—none of whom were included in the club’s US tour squad—before launching any bids.
Availability Issues
-
Villa are reluctant to sell Watkins, who scored 16 Premier League goals last season and is under contract until 2028.
-
Leipzig, meanwhile, have placed an £87m valuation on Sesko, with Newcastle also monitoring the 22-year-old Slovenian forward.
Amorim praised Hojlund’s physicality in the 2-1 win vs West Ham, but expressed frustration over his missed chances, including one that hit the post. If United are seeking a complete No. 9, Sesko’s aerial presence, pace, and two-footed finishing make him a strong contender.
Watkins, on the other hand, thrives in systems that value movement and intelligent positioning. His goal contributions and Premier League experience make him a ready-made option, though his price tag near £60m might deter United.
Amorim’s Transfer Philosophy
The Portuguese coach prefers signings with Premier League experience but hasn’t ruled out overseas talent, especially if it offers physical dominance and positional flexibility, both of which Sesko brings.
United have already spent nearly £130m this summer on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon, but none are expected to lead the line as traditional strikers.
Verdict: Who Fits Best?
If United are looking for a long-term investment with elite physical attributes and a higher ceiling, Sesko might be the preferred choice.
But if immediate output and Premier League readiness are the priority, Watkins could edge it—if Villa agree to negotiate.
For now, Hojlund remains the starting striker, but the clock is ticking, and with Sesko and Watkins circling, the Dane may soon face serious competition at Old Trafford.
