Marmoush and Semenyo Fire Man City Past Wolves
Manchester City 2–0 Wolves: Marmoush Opens Account as City End Winless Run
Omar Marmoush scored his first Premier League goal of the season as Manchester City got back on track with a comfortable 2–0 victory over struggling Wolves at the Etihad Stadium.
After a run of four winless league matches to start 2026, Pep Guardiola’s side responded with a dominant display, aided by standout performances from recent signings and tactical rotation that saw Erling Haaland and Phil Foden start on the bench.
First-Half Dominance Secures Points Early
City set the tone from the opening whistle, dominating possession and territory. Their breakthrough came in the 6th minute, when Marmoush stabbed home a pinpoint cross from Matheus Nunes to score his first goal of the season and justify Guardiola’s decision to start him over Haaland.
-
Debutant Marc Guehi, signed from Crystal Palace, almost marked his first start with a goal, but his early header was comfortably held by Jose Sa.
-
Antoine Semenyo, signed from Bournemouth two weeks ago, doubled the lead just before half-time with a composed finish from the edge of the box after receiving a crisp pass from Bernardo Silva.
The hosts continued to dominate after the break, with Semenyo rattling the crossbar in the 57th minute and Wolves rarely threatening.
City’s New Boys Shine Bright
The January arrivals stole the show:
-
Semenyo now has three goals in two weeks, showing his cutting edge and adaptability in Guardiola’s fluid attack.
-
Guehi provided much-needed composure at the back, helping City to a clean sheet alongside experienced campaigners.
This result lifts City closer to league leaders Arsenal, narrowing the gap to just four points—at least temporarily—with the Gunners facing Manchester United on Sunday.
Wolves Struggles Deepen
For Rob Edwards’ Wolves, the outlook continues to darken. Sitting bottom of the table and now 14 points from safety, the West Midlands club offered little threat, with just one shot on target throughout the match.
-
Yerson Mosquera hit the bar late on with a flicked header and had a handball shout go unpunished after VAR review, but Wolves were otherwise ineffective.
-
Wolves have now failed to score in 12 of their league games, underlining their lack of firepower.
Despite arriving in better form than City, their lack of quality in both boxes was brutally exposed.
