Fitzpatrick Eyes Players Title as Career Highlight

Why Winning The Players Would Be ‘Up There’ for Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick says winning The Players Championship would rank among the greatest moments of his career as the PGA Tour’s flagship event returns to TPC Sawgrass.

Often described as golf’s “unofficial fifth major”, the tournament features one of the strongest fields in the sport and one of its most famous holes — the island green at the 17th.

For Fitzpatrick, lifting the trophy would sit just below the major championship he already captured.

“It’s not the same as winning a major, but it’s the next best thing,” he told BBC Sport.

The Prestige of Golf’s ‘Fifth Major’

First staged in 1974, The Players Championship was created by the PGA Tour to establish its own signature event.

Today it is widely considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf.

The event combines:

  • One of the strongest fields in professional golf
  • One of the largest prize purses on the PGA Tour
  • One of the sport’s most iconic venues

The famous par-3 17th island green has become one of the most recognisable holes in golf, capable of transforming a tournament within seconds.

A Tough Test for the World’s Best

Despite its prestige, the tournament is notoriously unpredictable.

Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus remains the only player to win the event three times, claiming three of the first five titles.

Since the tournament moved permanently to Sawgrass in 1982, no player has surpassed that record.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler are among those hoping to match Nicklaus’ record this year.

Scheffler is also the only player to win the tournament in consecutive years.

Fitzpatrick’s Mixed Record at Sawgrass

Fitzpatrick has experienced both success and frustration at Sawgrass.

Over the past five years he has:

  • Finished 9th in 2021
  • Finished 5th in 2024
  • Missed the cut three times

The course demands accuracy, strategy and mental strength, with water hazards and bunkers ready to punish mistakes.

“It’s a really good test that makes you think,” Fitzpatrick said.

Strong Form Heading Into the Event

The 2022 US Open champion enters the tournament with encouraging form.

Fitzpatrick finished 2025 by winning the DP World Tour Championship and began the 2026 season with a top-10 finish at the Phoenix Open.

Statistically, his game has been in good shape.

Before last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational he ranked:

  • Top 20 in total strokes gained
  • 5th in tee-to-green performance

However, a late collapse with five bogeys in the final eight holes at Bay Hill saw him finish 41st.

Putting Could Be the Key

One of Fitzpatrick’s main challenges this season has been putting consistency.

Earlier in the year he struggled to convert chances on the greens during the PGA Tour’s west coast swing.

Encouragingly, his putting improved at Bay Hill, giving him optimism heading into Sawgrass.

“If I can make a few more putts then I’ve got a chance.”

With his driving and approach play already strong, improved putting could put him firmly in contention at one of golf’s most coveted tournaments.
