Merino and Saka Seal Arsenal Win Over Brentford
Arsenal 2-0 Brentford: Merino and Saka Fire Gunners to Victory
Arsenal maintained their five-point cushion at the summit of the Premier League with a professional 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium. First-half and stoppage-time goals from Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka ensured Mikel Arteta’s side extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions.
The Gunners boss made three changes to the team that drew against Chelsea last week, with Ben White, Martin Odegaard, and Noni Madueke returning to the lineup. The opening goal came early as White’s right-wing delivery found Merino, who powered home a header in the 11th minute—his 13th goal of the calendar year, more than any other Arsenal player.
Arsenal dominated possession but had to survive a scare before halftime when Brentford’s Kevin Schade forced David Raya into a fingertip save that deflected the ball onto the crossbar.
Bukayo Saka made sure of the three points in added time, latching onto a clever through ball from Merino before slotting past Brentford keeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Despite the Irishman’s best efforts, the ball trickled over the line.
There were concerns for the home side as both Declan Rice and Cristhian Mosquera were forced off due to knocks. However, Arsenal’s depth and resilience once again came to the fore, particularly with Merino contributing his sixth goal involvement in five games (3 goals, 3 assists).
Arsenal Analysis:
Arteta’s men continue to find ways to grind out results despite their packed fixture list and injury issues. With upcoming matches against top-six rivals, maintaining this momentum will be key.
Brentford Analysis:
Keith Andrews’ side showed glimpses of promise but were ultimately unable to breach Arsenal’s backline. Their poor away form continues, with only one win on the road this season.
Next up, Arsenal face another tough test as they host high-flying Aston Villa, while Brentford travel to take on relegation-battling Everton.
