Oscar Piastri Reflects on Controversial Alpine F1 Contract Saga
Early Career and Joining Alpine
Oscar Piastri’s journey to Formula 1 is nothing short of remarkable. The Australian driver, now a key part of McLaren’s line-up, first made waves in 2020 when he joined what was then the Renault Sport Academy. Piastri had just narrowly clinched the Formula Renault Eurocup title, a milestone that marked him as one of the brightest young talents in motorsport.
His rise didn’t stop there. In successive seasons, Piastri dominated the junior categories, winning both the F3 and F2 championships as a rookie—a feat that underlined his adaptability and raw pace. By the end of 2021, he was widely regarded as a future Formula 1 star, but fate had something complicated in store for the young driver.
Despite his success in junior categories, Piastri was not immediately handed an F1 race seat with Alpine for the 2022 season. Instead, he spent the year on the sidelines as Alpine’s reserve driver, an unusual situation for someone of his calibre.
The Challenge of Sitting Out
Reflecting on that period in a recent Off The Grid video filmed in Monaco, Piastri admitted that it was a challenging time.
“It was certainly a tough time,” he said. “Naturally, as a racing driver, you want to go racing. That year, not racing was tough, definitely.”
Being a reserve driver gave him a unique perspective, however. While he couldn’t get behind the wheel regularly, he was still fully immersed in the F1 environment—learning about race weekend routines, sponsor commitments, and the general rhythm of a season.
“It did allow me to view some things from the outside a little bit easier: being part of a weekend, understanding what media commitments are going to be like, what the sponsor commitments are going to be like, just the general rhythm of the season,” Piastri explained.
Even during this period of inactivity, he maintained focus and confidence, trusting that his time would come.
“I always kind of took pride in the fact that I was doing everything that I could, and I was always confident that something would come up,” he added.
Alpine’s Dilemma and the Contract Controversy
For Alpine, the 2022 season presented a peculiar problem: the team had three talented drivers competing for just two race seats. Piastri, Fernando Alonso, and Esteban Ocon were all vying for a spot, and Alpine’s management had to navigate a tricky balancing act.
At one point, Alpine considered loaning Piastri out to Williams to manage the situation. However, the driver landscape shifted when Alonso announced he would move to Aston Martin. With one seat suddenly available, Alpine announced Piastri’s promotion to a race seat—a decision the Australian immediately refuted.
“I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year,” Piastri stated at the time. “This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.”
The situation escalated, eventually requiring the intervention of the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB). Piastri had already signed a contract with McLaren, and the CRB ruled in favour of the British team, clearing the path for his Formula 1 debut away from Alpine.

Looking Back with Perspective
Piastri described the saga as tense at the time, but he now looks back on it with a sense of humour.
“I kind of knew that it was going to be a pretty big story,” he said. “There were reasons for doing that, it wasn’t just me going out of my way to announce to the world that I’m not racing.”
While the CRB ruling worked in his favour, the uncertainty of the period was stressful.
“It obviously went to the CRB. Things were in my favour, but that was another pretty tense moment,” Piastri admitted.
For a young driver, the episode highlighted the unpredictable and high-stakes nature of Formula 1, where contractual details can be as crucial as on-track performance.
Making His F1 Debut with McLaren
Ultimately, Piastri made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023, a moment he described as both incredible and humbling.
“That was an incredible moment. Then also kind of hits you that everything you’ve done previously almost doesn’t matter now,” he reflected.
The transition from junior categories to F1 is always a massive step, and Piastri’s case was further complicated by the contract saga. Nevertheless, he adapted quickly, demonstrating the talent and maturity that had defined his rise through the junior ranks.
McLaren, for its part, gained a driver with proven winning credentials and a calm, professional approach to high-pressure situations. Piastri’s ability to manage adversity and stay focused undoubtedly contributed to his smooth adaptation to the top tier of motorsport.
Lessons Learned Off the Track
One of the most valuable aspects of Piastri’s year as a reserve driver was what he learned off the track. Observing race weekends and understanding the broader demands of an F1 season gave him insights into the lifestyle and responsibilities of a Formula 1 driver that aren’t immediately apparent from results alone.
“Being part of a weekend, understanding what media commitments are going to be like, what the sponsor commitments are going to be like… I learned a few things about that,” he explained.
This period of observation, while difficult, allowed Piastri to enter McLaren better prepared for the multifaceted nature of Formula 1, where communication, media, and sponsor engagement are just as important as driving skill.
The Pressure of Expectations
With his impressive junior record, expectations on Piastri were immense. Many observers assumed he would step straight into Alpine, given his history with the team. The contract dispute added extra pressure, making his first F1 season a highly scrutinized period.
“Naturally, as a racing driver, you want to go racing,” he admitted. Missing out on a race seat, even temporarily, was a tough pill to swallow. But it also reinforced the importance of patience, professionalism, and staying focused on long-term goals.
Looking Ahead
Now firmly established at McLaren, Piastri’s career is on an upward trajectory. The early contract saga, while controversial, may have ultimately served him well, highlighting his determination, professionalism, and ability to navigate complex off-track challenges.
As Formula 1 continues to evolve with new regulations, emerging talent like Piastri will play a critical role in shaping the sport’s future. His experience serves as a reminder that success in F1 depends not only on driving skill but also on understanding the sport’s intricate ecosystem—from contracts and media to sponsorship obligations and team dynamics.
“I always kind of took pride in the fact that I was doing everything that I could,” Piastri said. That attitude, combined with his undeniable talent, ensures he will remain a key figure in Formula 1 for years to come.
