Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz mounted a determined comeback to defeat Andrey Rublev and secure his place in the Wimbledon 2025 quarter-finals, where he will face Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

The 22-year-old Spaniard edged closer to joining an elite club of men to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles in the Open era with a 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory under the Centre Court roof.

Alcaraz broke Rublev once in each of the final three sets to seal the win, extending his unbeaten run at SW19 to 18 matches and his overall streak to 22.

Alcaraz stays strong under pressure

After losing a tight opening-set tiebreak, Alcaraz responded with clinical precision. He converted his sole break point opportunities in the second and third sets before breaking Rublev again midway through the fourth to close out the match in two hours and 44 minutes.

“It is just about belief in yourself. One point can change a match completely,” Alcaraz said. “You have to stay strong mentally.”

His quarter-final opponent, Cameron Norrie, fought through a five-set thriller against Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry, ensuring a British presence in the latter stages of the tournament.

Rublev’s resilience falls short

Rublev, the 14th seed, started strong and served impressively throughout but could not prevent crucial breaks in each of the last three sets. Despite showing emotional control and flashes of brilliance, he bowed out after an admirable fight.

Alcaraz now faces Norrie in what promises to be a blockbuster clash in front of a partisan British crowd.

Fritz’s superstition fuels Wimbledon run

Meanwhile, American Taylor Fritz reached his second Wimbledon quarter-final after opponent Jordan Thompson retired hurt, trailing 6-1 3-0.

Fritz, 27, credits his meticulous pre-match routine for his strong form, calling it an “extreme level of superstition.”

“Everything I do off the court stays the same – from eating to organising clothes. I don’t change a winning formula,” he explained.

The world number five, who won titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne before Wimbledon, will next face Russia’s Karen Khachanov, who eased past Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 6-2 6-3.
