Avoid Usyk – Hatton urges caution with heavyweight star Itauma

Avoid Usyk – Hatton Urges Itauma to Build Slowly

Former world champion Ricky Hatton has urged rising star Moses Itauma to avoid rushing into a fight with heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk, despite growing calls for a world title shot.

The 20-year-old Brit knocked out Dillian Whyte in brutal fashion last Saturday, sparking speculation he could soon challenge Usyk, who holds all four major belts.

Hatton Calls for Patience

Hatton, who won world titles at both welterweight and light-welterweight, praised Itauma’s composure but warned against pushing too quickly.

“It was an experienced performance, way beyond his years,” Hatton told BBC Sport.

“But talking about Usyk next? Woah, let’s just hold fire. Usyk will only have a couple more fights, and the division is wide open for Moses.”

With just 13 fights and 26 rounds under his belt, Hatton suggested domestic bouts against Fabio Wardley or Frazer Clarke would be better stepping stones to grow Itauma’s fanbase.

Usyk’s Next Move Unclear

Usyk, 37, is recovering from injury and has requested an extension from the WBO to finalise terms with mandatory challenger Joseph Parker.

If Usyk vacates, the heavyweight division could splinter, creating opportunities for emerging fighters like Itauma to chase titles without facing the Ukrainian immediately.

Hatton Eyes His Own Return

Hatton also confirmed he will return to the ring on 2 December in Dubai against Eisa Al Dah.

  • The 46-year-old insists the bout will be fully sanctioned.

  • He could fight for a WBC Middle East title.

  • Hatton dismissed health concerns, saying: “I know what fights are in my capabilities and this one is within them.”

The “Hitman” retired in 2012 but has since fought in exhibitions. His comeback follows a wave of older stars re-entering combat sports, including Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson.

Outlook for Itauma

While Itauma’s raw talent has excited fans, Hatton believes patience is the key to longevity.

“Hold fire with Usyk,” Hatton said. “He’s going to get even better, so why fight him now? Get more experience, then fight him.”

The message is clear: Itauma may be destined for world titles, but caution could define whether he dominates the heavyweight division for years to come.
