Fernandes Misses Penalty as Man Utd Held 1-1 at Fulham
Manchester United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Fulham after captain Bruno Fernandes missed a first-half penalty before substitute Emile Smith Rowe struck late to deny Erik ten Hag’s side their first win of the season.
Fernandes’ Costly Miss
United were awarded a penalty when referee Chris Kavanagh ruled Calvin Bassey had fouled Mason Mount in the box after a long VAR review. But Fernandes, usually reliable from the spot, blazed his effort over the bar — his first penalty miss since December 2023.
United thought they had escaped punishment when a Leny Yoro header deflected in off Rodrigo Muniz to give them the lead midway through the second half. However, Smith Rowe equalised with 15 minutes to play, reacting quickest to an Alex Iwobi cross that caused chaos in the United box.
Goalkeeping Debate at United
The game also highlighted ongoing uncertainty around United’s goalkeepers. Altay Bayindir retained his place ahead of Andre Onana, producing a mix of sharp saves and shaky moments when dealing with corners.
Bayindir impressed with his distribution, including a stunning 70-yard pass that set up Matheus Cunha, but looked vulnerable under pressure, much as he had against Arsenal a week earlier. United continue to monitor Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp, raising further questions about their long-term plans.
Fulham’s Resilience
Fulham, still seeking their first win of the campaign, showed determination to end a run of eight straight home defeats to United. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno was again reliable, making key interventions late in the match.
Manager Marco Silva was furious with the decision to allow United’s opener, insisting Bassey had been pushed by Yoro in the build-up.
