Kelleher: “This Season Isn’t Just About Football” After Jota’s Death
Kelleher: “Football Not the Priority” After Jota’s Passing
Caoimhin Kelleher has spoken openly about the emotional toll Diogo Jota’s death continues to have on Liverpool, saying it’s “not even important from a football aspect” this season.
Jota tragically died in a car crash at age 28 last summer, leaving a lasting emotional scar on the club he helped win the Premier League and two domestic cups with.
“People expect you to move on quickly, and I don’t think that’s the case,” said Kelleher, now at Brentford.
“I find it difficult hearing people talk about Liverpool’s performances this season… there’s much more going on.”
A Club Still Mourning
-
Arne Slot previously said the squad still feels Jota’s absence deeply
-
Andy Robertson broke down in a post-match interview for Scotland, saying he “couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head”
-
Kelleher: “It’s probably been a bit easier for me, being away from it… but it’s a very difficult time for them”
Kelleher added that being away from Anfield made it easier to process grief, but stressed the Liverpool squad are navigating the season with that emotional burden.
Beyond Football
While Liverpool sit sixth in the Premier League, Kelleher believes any analysis of results or league position should be tempered with empathy.
“It’s more about them personally and mentally than anything else this season.”
