Liverpool Seal £116m Deal for Florian Wirtz

Liverpool Agree Club-Record £116m Deal for Florian Wirtz

Premier League champions Liverpool have secured the signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116m, making it the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.

The deal includes a guaranteed £100m, with a further £16m in performance-based add-ons, which would be triggered by sustained team success. If activated, it would set a new British transfer record, eclipsing Chelsea’s £107m signing of Enzo Fernandez.

Wirtz, 22, was also on the radar of Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but opted for a move to Anfield after expressing his clear preference to join Arne Slot’s side.

“Florian Wirtz is a generational talent. His ability to create, score, and adapt makes him a perfect fit for the next phase of Liverpool’s evolution,” said a club source.

Wirtz’s Profile: Rising Star of German Football

Wirtz made his Bundesliga debut at 17 and quickly became a sensation. He scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen and was pivotal in their historic 2024 Bundesliga title win.

He has already earned 31 caps for the Germany national team, scoring 7 times since his 2021 debut.

Wirtz to Wear Red: A Versatile Midfield Maestro

Liverpool are acquiring a creative force. Wirtz excels in multiple roles — as a central playmaker, a left-sided attacking midfielder, or false nine.

“He finds pockets, breaks lines, delivers final passes, and contributes defensively. The Premier League’s pace will be a test, but his work ethic will win over Liverpool fans quickly,” said ex-Prem coach Edu Rubio.

Second Signing From Leverkusen This Window

Wirtz becomes Liverpool’s second summer signing from Leverkusen, joining Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong in a £34m deal.

Slot’s team is also in advanced talks with Bournemouth for left-back Milos Kerkez, with the deal expected to be between £45m and £50m.

Smart Spending Fuels Big Move

Liverpool’s relatively conservative spending in recent transfer windows helped enable this record-breaking move.

Last summer’s only additions were Federico Chiesa (£12.5m) from Juventus and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) from Valencia — the latter set to join ahead of next season.

Departures and Restructuring

Among notable exits:

  • Caoimhin Kelleher joins Brentford for £12.5m rising to £18m.

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold completed a £8.4m early release move to Real Madrid, allowing him to feature in the Club World Cup.

Liverpool are also open to selling:

  • Darwin Nunez, attracting Saudi and European interest

  • Jarrell Quansah and Joe Gomez, potentially available depending on offers

What This Means for Liverpool

With Arne Slot’s reign starting with a league title, the addition of Wirtz signals intent to challenge on all fronts — domestically and in Europe. The German star adds both immediate impact and long-term potential as Liverpool rebuild their squad post-Klopp.
