Wirtz and Kerkez Next? Why Liverpool Are Spending Big
A New Era of Investment at Anfield
After a relatively quiet summer in 2024, Liverpool are making waves in the 2025 transfer window. The Premier League champions, who secured the title under Arne Slot in his debut season, are now showing their ambition with significant financial moves.
The Reds have already completed the £29.5m signing of Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong and are closing in on Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz for a club-record £109m. Talks are also ongoing for Bournemouth’s dynamic left-back Milos Kerkez, with a deal potentially worth up to £50m.
What Changed Since Last Summer?
Last season’s minimal transfer activity proved effective, but Slot has warned that staying competitive demands investment.
“It will be just as tough or even tougher next season,” Slot said. “We want good players—and ideally, we sign them early.”
Sporting director Richard Hughes, in his first full summer window, is pushing to complete deals swiftly to give Slot the best preparation—especially with Club World Cup duties ahead.
Targeting Key Positions
-
Right Side Reinforced: Frimpong replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed after a trophy-laden career.
-
Midfield Creativity: Wirtz, a key figure at Leverkusen, is seen as the future creative hub. Liverpool beat Manchester City to his signature.
-
Left-Back Reinforcement: Kerkez, just 21, is a high-energy, offensive full-back. He ranks among the Premier League’s best in distance covered, sprints, and open-play crosses.
With Kerkez potentially arriving, questions emerge about the futures of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
Could There Be More Signings?
Liverpool have shown interest in strengthening at centre-back—especially with Ibrahima Konaté entering the final year of his contract—and could pursue a new striker depending on outgoings.
Departures on the Horizon?
Darwin Nunez & Luis Diaz
Darwin Nunez may be shown the exit door after inconsistent form and public criticisms from Slot. Luis Diaz, despite a strong season, is attracting interest from Barcelona and Saudi Arabia. Social media messages from Diaz and his partner suggest a farewell may be near.
“Slot has played a winger, Luis Diaz, as a striker over Darwin—that tells you everything,” said former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy.
Harvey Elliott & Others
Harvey Elliott’s role remains unclear. With limited starts, he recently hinted his future is undecided. Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has already joined Brentford.
