Man Utd “Trying Everything” to Strengthen, But Won’t Repeat “Mistakes of the Past”
Ruben Amorim Speaks on Manchester United’s Transfer Strategy
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has assured fans that the club is doing everything possible to reinforce the squad before the January transfer window closes. However, he insists that past mistakes in recruitment won’t be repeated.
Amorim, 40, also addressed Marcus Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa, suggesting it wouldn’t concern him if the forward found form elsewhere while United continue to struggle for goals.
“It is not embarrassing,” said Amorim. “When you loan a player, you expect him to play and improve. There is nothing humiliating about that.”
Rashford Nears Villa Move as United Struggle for Goals
The 27-year-old forward, who has been out of favor since December 12, recently underwent a medical at Aston Villa ahead of a loan transfer. Rashford reportedly accepted that he was not going to get regular game time under Amorim at Old Trafford.
Despite his limited playing time, Rashford is still only two goals away from being United’s joint-top scorer this season. Meanwhile, United’s 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace further exposed their attacking struggles.
Shocking Goal Stats for Manchester United
Only five teams in the league have scored fewer goals than United (28) – including Everton, Ipswich, Leicester, and Southampton.
Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood has as many home goals (17) as the entire United squad at Old Trafford this season.
Rasmus Højlund (7 goals) and Joshua Zirkzee (4 goals) were both benched against Palace, with Amorim instead experimenting with Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine – a tactic that ultimately failed.
Amorim: “I Want to Improve the Team So Badly”
With deadline day approaching, speculation is growing about further United signings.
Recent arrivals include:
✅ Patrick Dorgu (£25m – Lecce, Defender)
✅ Ayden Heaven (Arsenal, Youngster)
However, potential deals for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku are considered unlikely. United may need to offload players to fund further signings.
“We are trying everything to improve the team without making past mistakes,” Amorim said. “We need to balance urgency with sustainability.”
United’s Worsening Home Record Under Amorim
United have lost five of their last six Premier League home matches under Amorim.Amorim has already lost more league games at Old Trafford than Jose Mourinho (4) and has matched Louis van Gaal’s (5) record in just half a season.
Despite this, club executives remain wary of reckless spending, especially given previous poor signings like:
Antony (£81.3m – Ajax) → Now loaned to Real Betis
Tyrell Malacia (£13m – Feyenoord) → Expected to leave Old Trafford
United’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) constraints mean financial prudence is essential.
Deadline Day: A Crucial Moment for Manchester United
As the transfer window nears its final hours, the club must make critical decisions:
Can they afford more signings without selling key players?
Will Rashford’s departure come back to haunt them?
Can Amorim find a reliable goal-scoring solution before the window shuts?
Unlike Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, who can build freely, United’s financial limitations mean that missing out on reinforcements could have lasting consequences.
Amorim knows the stakes are high. Without a productive January transfer window, the club risks remaining in the bottom half of the table—a scenario that would increase scrutiny on the Portuguese coach ahead of the 2025-26 season.
The Verdict: United Must Take a Risk
“At this stage, with limited money to spend, there are no guarantees,” Amorim admitted. “But we have to try. If we don’t, it will be me feeling the heat.”
With the transfer deadline approaching, Manchester United face a make-or-break moment in their season.
