Rooney: ‘Incredible’ Rice Is Future England Captain
Former England legend Wayne Rooney has hailed Declan Rice as the natural successor to Harry Kane as captain of the national team, calling the Arsenal midfielder “absolutely incredible” after his commanding performance in a 1-0 win over Everton.
Rooney, who wore the armband for England between 2014 and 2017, was full of praise for Rice on the latest episode of BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show:
“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point.”
The 26-year-old has already captained the Three Lions twice, in a 2-2 draw with Belgium in March 2024 and a 3-0 win over Wales in October. With 72 England caps, Rice has emerged as a key leader in the squad.
“He was all over the pitch. His decision-making, when to pass, where to pass, what foot to pass it to – it was a pleasure to watch,” Rooney added.
“He’s irreplaceable for England. He’s got drive, personality, and everyone seems to love him.”
‘No Reason’ Calvert-Lewin Shouldn’t Get World Cup Shot

Rooney also turned attention to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has rediscovered his form at Leeds United after an injury-hit spell at Everton.
The 28-year-old has scored in five consecutive games, including a brace in Leeds’ recent 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, and Rooney believes he could force his way into England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
“If he continues this, then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be talked about – or even get an opportunity – to go to the World Cup.”
Rooney cited the lack of quality strikers in the England setup and Calvert-Lewin’s physicality and aerial ability as strong assets:
“He’s great in both boxes and a handful when in form. You forget how good a player he is.”
Rooney acknowledged Everton made a tough but correct decision to let Calvert-Lewin leave given his injury struggles, but praised Leeds’ physio team for helping him maintain fitness.
Gyokeres Does ‘More Than What You See’

Viktor Gyokeres’ winner against Everton was his seventh goal of the season in all competitions
While Viktor Gyokeres continues to divide opinion at Arsenal, Rooney defended the Swedish striker, noting his impact beyond just scoring.
“He occupies centre-backs and creates space for other players like the number 10 or wingers. That’s important in Arteta’s system.”
Although Gyokeres netted his first goal since November with a confident penalty against West Ham, his overall output of seven goals in all competitions is seen as modest.
Still, Rooney insists his contribution cannot be underestimated:
“Can he score more? Yes. But if Arsenal go on to win the league, he’ll have had a big role to play.”
