Olympic Champion Zheng Qinwen Takes Break After Elbow Surgery

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen has announced a short break from the WTA Tour after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow.

The 22-year-old Chinese star, seeded fifth at Wimbledon 2025, suffered a surprise first-round exit earlier this month and revealed she had been battling “persistent pain” in her elbow.

“Now begins the recovery journey,” the world No.6 wrote on Instagram. “Over the next few weeks and months, I’ll be focusing entirely on rehab – doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier. This is just a short break and I see it as a necessary step toward a better version of myself on court.”

Zheng, who won Olympic gold in Paris 2024 and has five WTA titles to her name, underwent the procedure on Friday and expressed relief at having “it behind me”.

Zheng’s Recent Achievements

  • Olympic Champion (2024) – Women’s singles gold in Paris.

  • Grand Slam Best – Australian Open finalist (2024), US Open quarter-finalist (2022 & 2023), French Open quarter-finalist (2025).

  • Latest Title – Pan Pacific Open, Japan (October 2024).

Despite her success, Zheng is yet to lift a Grand Slam trophy. She will be hoping to recover in time for the US Open, which begins on 24 August at Flushing Meadows.
