Postecoglou Admits Nottingham Forest “Not Ruthless Enough” After Another Winless Game
“We Are Not Ruthless Enough” – Postecoglou on Nottingham Forest’s Goal Drought
Ange Postecoglou has admitted Nottingham Forest are “not ruthless enough” after a frustrating 1-0 home loss to Sunderland, which extends his winless start as head coach to five matches.
Despite dominating possession (64.9%) and having 21 shots, Forest couldn’t find the net. It’s a familiar theme since the Australian took charge on 9 September, as his side continues to create but not convert.
“We are just not ruthless enough turning the dominance we have into wins,” said Postecoglou.
“The players have the right mindset and clear heads… but we need to change that.”
Forest’s Frustrating Pattern: Possession Without Points
Under Postecoglou, Forest have shown an attacking intent missing under Nuno Espírito Santo. But the results haven’t followed.
Here’s a snapshot of the concerning trend:
-
Winless in five since Postecoglou took over
-
Only one point from games against newly promoted Burnley and Sunderland
-
39 total shots in those two games – just 1 goal scored
-
Conceded first in 10 of their last 14 PL matches, winning none (D3 L7)
-
Five home defeats in last seven Premier League games
Despite improvements in shot volume and possession, Forest lack the clinical edge.
“The change has been made, the football has progressed… but we are not winning and we need to change that,” said striker Chris Wood.
Tactical Shift But No Rewards (Yet)
Postecoglou’s system has made Forest more possession-based and attacking. In just three Premier League games:
-
Forest have had 44 shots, compared to 31 under Nuno’s last three.
-
They recorded their highest Premier League possession (64.9%) since promotion.
But goals win games, and the inability to convert chances is costing Forest dearly.
Former Forest midfielder Andy Reid remained optimistic:
“They were brilliant against Betis at times. Once things click into place, I’m sure they’ll kick on.”
Referee Controversy Fuels Fan Frustration
Saturday’s match wasn’t short on controversy either. The only goal came from a highly debated free-kick awarded to Sunderland:
-
Nicolas Dominguez was penalized for simulation despite appearing to be caught after clearing the ball.
-
Neco Williams claimed he was “held back” during the resulting set-piece that led to Omar Alderete’s winner.
“I’ve never seen a referee give that before,” said Williams.
“It’s two poor decisions, especially by the referee and the people on VAR.”
Postecoglou echoed the frustration but took ownership for the defensive lapse:
“It was a whole range of decisions from the officials… but we were still too lax in our determination to keep the ball out.”
Can Postecoglou Turn Forest’s Season Around?
Forest fans are growing restless, with just one win in their last nine league matches. But there are positive signs:
-
Higher possession
-
More chances created
-
Tactical identity forming
However, points are what matter, and Postecoglou knows that. With tougher fixtures looming, Forest must start converting dominance into results—fast.
“My job is to rectify that. Fans have every right to be disappointed.”
