Alexander-Arnold Mural Vandalised Ahead of Anfield Return

Mural Defaced Before Emotional Anfield Return

A mural of Trent Alexander-Arnold, located near Anfield, was defaced just hours before the Real Madrid defender’s highly anticipated return to face former club Liverpool in the Champions League.

Originally unveiled in 2019 to celebrate Liverpool’s European triumph, the mural was again targeted with graffiti, including the word “Rat” and the phrase “adios el rata”, referencing the player’s controversial departure to Spain. White paint was also thrown at the image but was quickly removed.

Back at Anfield: A Tense Reunion Awaits

The 27-year-old right-back, a product of Liverpool’s academy, announced in May that he would leave the club at the end of his contract, sparking boos from sections of the fanbase. His transfer to Real Madrid was finalised in June, and fate has now brought him back to Anfield in the Champions League league phase.

“Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans,” Alexander-Arnold said in the pre-match press conference.

“I’ll always love the club… and be thankful for the opportunities and achievements — they’ll live with me forever.”

Decorated History with Liverpool

Before joining Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a glittering spell at Liverpool:

  • 2x Premier League titles

  • 1x UEFA Champions League

  • 1x FA Cup

  • 1x EFL Cup

He was a local hero, rising through the ranks to become one of Europe’s elite full-backs, known for his vision, passing, and creativity.

Tribute at Anfield Memorial

Despite the mural incident, Alexander-Arnold demonstrated respect for his former club by laying flowers at the Anfield memorial for Diogo Jota, his ex-teammate, during a visit with Real Madrid officials on Monday.

Managerial and Teammate Perspectives

Liverpool Manager Arne Slot:

“I have great memories of the player and the human being.

He gets a warm welcome from me — but how the fans react, I have no clue.”

Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool Midfielder):

“He’s a friend of mine — I’ll give him a hug.”

Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid Manager):

“He was born and bred in Liverpool. I remember him coming through the academy.

He needs to enjoy this moment in his own way.”

Fitness Update: Back from Injury

Alexander-Arnold has been out of action since 16 September with a hamstring injury sustained during Real’s Champions League clash against Marseille. He is now fully recovered and available for selection against Liverpool.

All Eyes on Anfield

While both clubs focus on their Champions League campaign, all attention will be on how Liverpool supporters greet one of their own who chose a different path. Will the night bring closure, or deepen the divide?
