Russo Shines with a Brace as Arsenal Beat Everton 3-1 to Go Second in WSL

Alessia Russo delivered a standout performance, netting twice as Arsenal secured their fourth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) victory, moving up to second place with a 3-1 win over Everton at Walton Hall Park.

Russo Opens the Scoring Before Everton Hit Back

The Gunners took the lead in the 24th minute, with Russo slotting home from close range after Kim Little’s precise cross into the box.

However, Everton responded just before half-time. A blocked effort from Katja Snoeijs fell kindly to Toni Payne, who reacted quickest to bundle in her first goal for the Toffees.

Arsenal Take Control in Second Half

With the game finely balanced, Arsenal boss Renee Slegers made a bold quadruple substitution on the hour mark, a move that quickly paid off. Just three minutes later, Caitlin Foord’s presence in the box pressured Maren Mjelde into scoring an own goal, restoring the visitors’ lead.

Despite Arsenal’s dominance, they squandered opportunities to extend their advantage. Frida Maanum’s low strike drifted inches wide, while Steph Catley hit the woodwork twice—first with a flicked header and then with a powerful effort from a tight angle.

Russo Seals Victory and Continues Goal-Scoring Form

But Russo made no mistake in stoppage time, latching onto Beth Mead’s through-ball and calmly finishing for her 10th WSL goal of the season. The result lifts Arsenal above Manchester United on goal difference, trailing league leaders Chelsea by eight points.

Russo’s Golden Boot Chase Gains Momentum

Scoring Arsenal’s opener for the fifth time this season, Russo has been instrumental in the Gunners’ success. Her second goal of the night brings her within two strikes of Khadija Shaw in the Golden Boot race.

This was Russo’s first brace since December 2024, when she bagged two against Aston Villa. However, her impact this season has been consistent, delivering when Arsenal have needed her most.

With a crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid looming on Tuesday, Russo’s top form could prove decisive as Arsenal chase European glory and a top-three WSL finish.
