Fritz Dominates Musetti to Open ATP Finals With Statement Win
Fritz Fires Past Musetti to Begin ATP Finals With Style
Taylor Fritz produced a serving masterclass to defeat Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4 and kick off his ATP Finals 2025 campaign in dominant fashion on Monday.
The world number six, who finished runner-up at the event last year, dropped only three points on serve in the second set and never allowed Musetti to find rhythm in front of an energetic home crowd in Turin.
Fritz, 28, had lost his previous two encounters against Musetti, including one in 2022. But on this occasion, he erased early nerves and took full control after saving four break points in the opening stages.
“I was a little shaky at the start and I was letting him dictate a little too much,” Fritz told Sky Sports.
“I was a bit nervy, which is expected. But I loosened up and started playing a lot better.”
Musetti Struggles With Fatigue and Missed Chances
Lorenzo Musetti, the ninth seed, was a late entrant to the ATP Finals, gaining his spot after Novak Djokovic withdrew on Sunday following his Athens Open title.
The Italian had chances early in the match, with four break points in the first three games, but failed to convert any. As fatigue kicked in, seven of his nine service games went to deuce, and Fritz capitalized with relentless consistency and precision.
Key Match Stats:
-
Aces: Fritz 8, Musetti 2
-
Break Points Saved: Fritz 4/4
-
First Serve Points Won: Fritz 88%
-
Total Points Won: Fritz 68, Musetti 51
Sinner Eyes No.1 as ATP Finals Heat Up
Jannik Sinner, world number one and defending champion, opens his title defense later on Monday against Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Italian is in a tight race with Carlos Alcaraz for the year-end No.1 ranking.
For Sinner to retain his spot atop the rankings, he must win the title and hope Alcaraz loses a group match and fails to reach the final.
British Doubles Duo Start Strong
In the doubles event, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski made a strong start with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.
Salisbury, a two-time Finals champion alongside Rajeev Ram, now partners fellow Briton Skupski as they aim to become the first all-British pair to lift the season-ending crown.
