Gordon Scores Twice as Newcastle Thrash Union SG 4-0 in Brussels
Woltemade Opens the Floodgates
It took just 17 minutes for Nick Woltemade to open the scoring. Sandro Tonali met Anthony Elanga’s cross with a crisp volley from the edge of the area, which deflected off the German striker and wrong-footed goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
Despite the early setback, Belgian champions Union SG showed fight, forcing a fine save from Nick Pope to deny Adem Zorgane.
Gordon Clinical From the Spot – Twice
Newcastle doubled their lead just before half-time after Elanga was brought down by Fedde Leysen. Gordon stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sending Scherpen the wrong way.
Midway through the second half, a VAR check confirmed handball by Leysen, handing Gordon another opportunity from the spot, which he slotted home with similar precision to make it 3-0.
Barnes Seals It Late
Harvey Barnes, coming off the bench, capped the win with a composed finish inside the box in the final minutes. The goal was a product of a swift counter-attack initiated by Gordon himself, who intercepted the ball deep in Newcastle’s half and launched the move.
Newcastle Analysis: A Complete European Performance
This was Newcastle’s best attacking display of the season, and it came at a perfect time. The new attacking trio of Woltemade, Elanga, and Gordon looked fluid, direct, and dangerous.
-
Woltemade: Scored his third goal in four starts, proving his poacher instincts.
-
Gordon: Now has 3 Champions League goals this season and continues to grow in stature.
-
Elanga: Direct, explosive, and involved in both of Newcastle’s first-half goals.
-
Nick Pope: Made crucial saves that kept Union SG from mounting a comeback.
The win sends a message to the rest of Group E – Newcastle are back in Europe to compete, not just participate.
Manager Reaction – Eddie Howe
“I’m proud of the way we responded after Sunday. Tonight was clinical and controlled. We showed real intent.”
