How Can Liverpool Afford Isak After £170m Summer Spending?
Liverpool’s summer transfer spree shows no sign of slowing down, with reports linking them to Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak in a deal that could smash the British transfer record.
Having already spent over £170m on Florian Wirtz (£116m), Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£30m), the Reds’ total outlay could soar to £300m if they land Isak for a reported £130m package.
So how can Arne Slot’s Premier League champions afford such heavy spending?
Why Liverpool’s Transfer Budget Is So Strong
Liverpool’s finances have been boosted by:
-
Premier League prize money of £175m after winning the title.
-
A new Adidas kit deal worth £60m annually, starting 1 August.
-
Increased matchday revenue from the expanded Anfield Road Stand.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport:
“Liverpool are in an incredibly strong PSR position. Out of the big six clubs, they’ve spent the least over the last three years, giving them plenty of wiggle room.”
Despite this summer’s signings, Liverpool’s total net spend over the past three years remains below £325m, keeping them within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Could Player Sales Fund More Deals?
While Liverpool rejected Bayern Munich’s £58.6m bid for Luis Diaz this week, they are reportedly open to selling Darwin Nunez, who has attracted interest from Napoli and clubs in Saudi Arabia.
Slot’s side have also explored striker alternatives including Hugo Ekitike, Yoane Wissa, and Ollie Watkins, but Isak remains their dream target.
Liverpool’s Recent Record Signings:
-
Florian Wirtz – £116m (2025)
-
Darwin Nunez – up to £85m (2022)
-
Virgil van Dijk – £75m (2018)
-
Alisson Becker – £66.8m (2018)
Who Else Could Sign Isak?
Newcastle remain adamant their star striker is not for sale unless Isak pushes for a move. Few other clubs can afford the £130m price tag:
-
Arsenal are instead finalising a £63.5m deal for Viktor Gyokeres.
-
Manchester City are well-stocked with Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush.
-
Manchester United would need major player sales to compete.
-
Tottenham could afford Isak but face a sporting gap after finishing 17th.
