McIlroy to Miss FedEx St Jude Championship Opener
Rory McIlroy to Miss PGA Tour Play-Off Opener in Memphis
Rory McIlroy will miss the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup play-offs, the St Jude Championship, next week in Memphis.
The Masters champion was not included in the official field list published on Friday, confirming he will sit out the first of the three crucial post-season events.
McIlroy, currently ranked second in the FedEx Cup standings behind world number one Scottie Scheffler, has not played competitively since his tied-seventh finish at The Open Championship last month at Royal Portrush.
Why McIlroy is Skipping Memphis
While McIlroy has not publicly given a reason for his absence, his decision may be strategic. The 36-year-old struggled at the St Jude Championship last year, finishing near the bottom of the leaderboard at nine over par.
By skipping Memphis, McIlroy will rely on his strong position in the FedEx Cup standings to secure advancement into the next stages of the play-offs.
What’s Next in the FedEx Cup Play-Offs
-
St Jude Championship (Memphis) – Top 70 qualify
-
BMW Championship (Maryland, 14–17 August) – Top 50 advance
-
Tour Championship (Atlanta, 21–24 August) – Top 30 compete for FedEx Cup
Despite sitting out next week, McIlroy is still well-positioned to compete in the BMW Championship, and will almost certainly make the Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup title will be decided.
Upcoming Schedule for McIlroy
Following the FedEx Cup play-offs, McIlroy is expected to return to Europe for:
-
Irish Open at The K Club (September)
-
BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth (September)
He will then travel to the United States for the much-anticipated Ryder Cup in New York.
Scheffler Headlines Field in Memphis
The St Jude Championship will mark Scottie Scheffler’s first start since his dominant four-shot win at The Open. The world number one will look to build on his stellar season as he eyes his first FedEx Cup title.
