Penge Seals Spanish Open Victory in Play-Off Thriller

Marco Penge Wins Spanish Open in Play-Off Drama

Marco Penge captured his third European Tour title of the season by holding his nerve in a sudden-death play-off to defeat fellow Englishman Daniel Brown at the 2025 Spanish Open in Madrid.

The 25-year-old sealed victory with a brilliant eight-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole after both players had tied on 15 under par following regulation play.

Final Round Drama at Club de Campo

Penge began the final day at -16, four shots ahead of Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach and five clear of Daniel Brown, but could only post a one-over-par 72 in challenging Sunday conditions.

Brown applied serious pressure by shooting a final-round 67, including a clutch birdie on the 18th to force a play-off.

Girrbach, meanwhile, carded a 69 to finish third on 14 under par.

Play-Off Decider

Returning to the 18th hole, Penge produced a perfect approach and calmly rolled in the birdie putt to clinch the title, his third win of the 2025 campaign following victories earlier in the season.

Masters & Open Berths Secured

The triumph ensures Penge’s automatic qualification for:

  • The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next year

  • The prestigious Masters Tournament at Augusta National

This marks a stunning turnaround for the Englishman, who was hit with a three-month betting suspension last December, one month of which was suspended.

Penge on his win:

“It was a strange day… I felt the golfing gods were against me, but I stayed composed. Holing that final putt in the play-off made it all worth it.”
