Spurs Captain Cristian Romero Signs New Four-Year Contract
Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new four-year deal that will keep him in north London until 2029.
Romero Extends Stay
The 27-year-old Argentina international first joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan, before making the move permanent the following summer. Since then, he has established himself as a defensive leader, making 126 appearances and scoring eight goals.
Romero played a pivotal role last season, captaining Tottenham to their Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.
Captaincy and Commitment
After being strongly linked with Atletico Madrid this summer, Romero’s future looked uncertain. However, new head coach Thomas Frank quickly named him club captain, and this new contract underlines Spurs’ intent to build around their defensive talisman.
Romero said he was delighted to commit:
“For me this club is the best in the world. The last two weeks, first being appointed captain and now signing the contract – it’s a fantastic decision. We want to win. Why not win again this season?”
Frank on Romero’s Leadership
Frank has praised Romero for setting the standard at Spurs:
“What I like about him and why I chose him as captain is his leadership qualities. The staff say they’ve never seen him train this well. He commands respect, and I see a player who will push the team forward.”
Spurs’ Long-Term Planning
Romero’s extension follows that of Djed Spence, who signed a new deal last week. Spence, 25, has revived his Spurs career after loan spells in France, England and Italy, and is now a regular fixture in the squad.
Both new contracts reflect Spurs’ push for stability and long-term planning under Frank, as the club look to build on last season’s Europa League triumph.
