The Story Behind Golf’s Most Famous Bench at Royal Portrush
For almost 15 years, it’s been called the most famous bench in golf.
Perched on the sixth tee at Royal Portrush, with stunning views over the beach and stretching coastline, this humble wooden seat has gone viral at The Open 2025.
Some of the sport’s biggest stars – including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm – have been spotted taking a moment to relax on it during the tournament.
But what’s the story behind this now-iconic spot?
A Bench Built on Friendship
The inscription reads:
“Jim McDowell – from just a few of his many golfing friends to mark the occasion of his 70th birthday.”
It’s a legacy of camaraderie and laughter.
“Dad’s not with us anymore but he used to play every Wednesday at Royal Portrush with a group of hackers,” said Jim’s daughter Zoe.
“They’d have the best time – a wee regroup at the halfway house – and play pretty well on the back nine. They became great friends. For his 70th, they all chipped in to get him a bench.”
The club secretary at the time chose the sixth tee for its breathtaking setting.
“We think she picked the best spot,” Zoe added. “It was a surprise for him and it’s been a joy to enjoy it ever since.”
A Place for Reflection – and Craic
Jim McDowell was one of the lucky few to get a bench while still alive.
“He’d sit there with his friends and have the craic,” said Claire, Jim’s other daughter.
“There are lots of family stories from the bench. Now it’s amazing to see some of the world’s top golfers enjoying it too.”
The sisters visit the bench every year to reflect on memories of their dad.
“Most people go to a grave – we go to a bench,” Claire said with a smile.
From Family Memories to Open Fame
As photos of McIlroy and Scheffler sitting on the bench went viral this week, the family couldn’t help but imagine their dad’s reaction.
“We were so excited. Dad would have absolutely loved this,” Claire said.
“It’s been a bit mad, but for us it was always the best bench in golf.”
The bench stands as a quiet testament to friendship, love, and the simple joys of the game.
Now, thousands of fans – and some of golf’s greatest names – have a chance to enjoy it too.
