Wiegman Wins Second Coach of the Year After Euro Glory

Wiegman, 55, led England to a second European title, beating Spain 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time. This was her second Ballon d’Or coaching award after previously winning in 2022.

Her speech was both emotional and powerful, acknowledging the growth of the women’s game and addressing ongoing societal challenges:

“This is not just a personal honour – it’s a recognition of the women’s game and how far we’ve come,” she said.

“Let’s keep fighting together against misogyny and racism. Sport should always unite, never divide.”

Wiegman paid special tribute to her players, staff, and family, and reflected on the legacy of Johan Cruyff, after whom the award is named.

Hannah Hampton, 24, was England’s penalty shootout hero in the Euro 2025 final, saving two Spanish penalties and delivering an outstanding tournament performance.

In her emotional acceptance speech, Hampton dedicated the award to the late Matt Beard, a much-loved women’s football coach who passed away days earlier.

“Matt Beard was a trailblazer… He lit up the room. Sometimes the brightest smiles hide the heaviest pain,” Hampton said.

Hampton also shared a heartfelt thank-you to her family and coaches, including Sarina Wiegman, and paid tribute to her grandfather, ending with:

“To Grandpa – I love and miss you every day. I hope I made you proud. We did it.”

From Eye Surgery to Global Glory

Born with a serious eye condition, Hampton was advised not to play football. She overcame multiple surgeries and continued depth perception issues to rise to the top.

Her win marks a historic milestone for women’s goalkeepers, becoming the first-ever recipient of the Yashin Trophy on the women’s side.
