Cristiano Ronaldo has taken another major step beyond the pitch after acquiring a 25% stake in Spanish Segunda División side UD Almeria.

The 41-year-old forward, currently playing for Al-Nassr, purchased his share through his newly formed CR7 Sports Investments company.

While financial details remain undisclosed, Ronaldo described the move as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition.

“It has been a long-held ambition of mine to contribute to football, beyond the pitch,” he said.

“UD Almeria is a Spanish club with strong foundations and clear potential for growth.”

Strategic Move in Spanish Football

Almeria are owned by a Saudi Arabian investment consortium led by Mohammed Al-Khereiji, whose SMC Group acquired the club last year from Turki Al-Sheikh.

Currently third in Segunda, just two points off leaders Real Racing with 15 games remaining, Almeria are pushing for promotion back to La Liga.

Ronaldo’s experience in Spanish football — having won two La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during nine glittering seasons at Real Madrid — adds sporting credibility to the project.

Club president Al-Khereiji welcomed the investment:

“He is regarded as the greatest to ever play the game. He knows the Spanish leagues very well and understands the potential of what we are building here.”

Ronaldo’s involvement reflects a wider strategic shift toward long-term investment in football.

According to 2025 financial rankings, he generated nearly £210m in total earnings, with more than £50m coming from off-field ventures.

His business portfolio includes:

  • Hospitality ventures across Lisbon, Madrid, New York and Marrakech

  • Fitness chains in Portugal and Spain

  • A global hair-transplant clinic group

  • Lifestyle and fashion brands

  • Health and recovery products

The Almeria investment signals a deeper move into football ownership, not just brand partnerships.

Vision Beyond Retirement

At the 2024 Dubai Globe Soccer Awards, Ronaldo hinted at ambitions to own and reshape a football club, suggesting he understood the structural weaknesses within European giants.

Now, with a 25% stake in Almeria, that vision begins to materialise.

As he continues his playing career in Saudi Arabia — reportedly earning £177m annually — Ronaldo is simultaneously constructing a post-playing legacy rooted in ownership and influence.

The treadmill of elite football may eventually slow, but Ronaldo’s presence in the sport appears set to continue long after his boots are hung up.
