Russell Dominates as Rookie Stars Shine in Melbourne

Russell ‘Imperious’ as Rookie Stars Shine in Australian GP Ratings

George Russell delivered a commanding performance to win the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and lead the first driver ratings of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.

The Mercedes driver converted pole position into victory in Melbourne, finishing ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli to secure an early one-two finish for the Silver Arrows.

While Russell dominated the weekend, several rookies — including Oliver Bearman and Arvid Lindblad — produced standout performances.

Russell Leads the Field

Russell was rated 9/10 after an almost flawless weekend.

Despite losing the lead briefly at the start after a battery issue, he quickly regained control of the race once he passed Charles Leclerc.

From that point onward, the Brit rarely faced serious pressure.

His victory reinforced why many paddock insiders believe he is a title favourite in the new F1 era.

Antonelli Completes Mercedes One-Two

Antonelli received 7/10 for his recovery drive.

The Italian endured a heavy crash in final practice which left Mercedes mechanics scrambling to rebuild the car before qualifying.

Despite a shaky start in the race, Antonelli recovered impressively to secure second place, marking a strong start to his debut season with Mercedes.

Ferrari Pair Deliver Solid Performances

Leclerc earned 7.5/10 after a strong race that included a brilliant launch into Turn One.

The Ferrari driver fought Russell aggressively during the opening laps but lost ground due to team strategy decisions.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton matched his team-mate’s rating.

Hamilton showed impressive race pace and stayed within striking distance of Leclerc until the final laps.

Mixed Weekend for Norris and Verstappen

Lando Norris received 5/10 after a difficult weekend.

The McLaren driver struggled with limited running and failed to outqualify team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen also scored 5/10 after crashing in qualifying.

Starting from 20th, Verstappen fought through the field to finish in the points but lacked the pace to challenge Norris for fifth place.

Bearman Impresses in Midfield Battle

Bearman produced one of the most impressive drives of the weekend.

Rated 7/10, the Brit outqualified team-mate Esteban Ocon and delivered a composed performance to finish seventh.

The young driver stayed out of trouble and executed several clean overtakes to secure valuable points.

Lindblad Shines on F1 Debut

Perhaps the most eye-catching performance came from Lindblad.

The rookie earned 8/10 after climbing from eighth to third early in the race before eventually finishing eighth.

Driving for Racing Bulls, Lindblad also won an intense energy-management battle with Gabriel Bortoleto.

It marked an outstanding start to his Formula 1 career.

Disappointments Across the Grid

Several drivers endured difficult weekends:

  • Alex Albon – 3/10
  • Carlos Sainz – 3/10
  • Lance Stroll – 3/10

Meanwhile, veteran Fernando Alonso scored 5/10 after using the race largely as a learning session while adapting to the new regulations.

Early Signs of a Competitive Season

The first race of the season provided plenty of drama, with standout performances from both established stars and young drivers.

Mercedes appear strong early on, but Ferrari and several promising rookies showed they could challenge throughout the season.

With the next race scheduled in China, the new Formula 1 era is already producing intense debate — and compelling racing.
