Salah a ‘Top Professional’ After Being Dropped – Arne Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has lauded Mohamed Salah as a “top professional” for his reaction to being dropped for the Reds’ crucial 2-0 win at West Ham on Sunday.

It was the first time Salah was benched in the Premier League since April 2024, and came after a poor run of nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions. Despite the setback, the Egyptian forward remained composed and committed, according to Slot.

“Handled Himself Really Well”

Slot acknowledged that Salah was likely disappointed not to feature at all:

“That’s a normal reaction from a player that’s good enough to play for us… he’s been so outstanding for this club for so many years and will be in the future.”

Slot praised Salah’s work ethic and attitude:

“He is so disciplined – he knows what to do to stay fit. Whether he plays or not, he will always be that top professional.”

Form Dip Before AFCON Departure

Salah, who won the Premier League Golden Boot last season with 29 goals, has struggled to replicate that form, scoring just four goals so far this league season. His recent form was enough for Slot to start him on the bench in favor of a restructured right side featuring Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot also confirmed Salah’s impending departure to the Africa Cup of Nations on 15 December, with Egypt in contention for the title. The final is scheduled for 18 January 2026.

“We have to find a way to play without him because he won’t be here,” Slot added.

What Games Will Salah Miss?

If Egypt reaches the AFCON final, Salah could miss up to seven Liverpool matches, including:

  • 🆚 Brighton (13 Dec – potential last game before AFCON)

  • 🆚 Arsenal (8 Jan – Premier League)

  • Additional league and domestic cup fixtures

His earliest possible return would be 19 January, depending on Egypt’s progress.

Tactical Changes Bear Fruit

Liverpool’s 4-2-3-1 shape against West Ham appeared more balanced, especially on the right flank. Gomez’s solidity and Szoboszlai’s attacking freedom allowed for greater defensive structure and creativity, areas that had been exposed in recent losses.

The victory was just Liverpool’s second league win since September, providing a much-needed boost as they prepare to host Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday.

Sunderland Threat Ahead

Sunderland currently sit sixth, ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League table. The Black Cats are hoping for a historic win at Anfield – their first since 1983.

“We know Sunderland will pose a tough test,” Slot said ahead of the clash.
