Sandoval Stuns Teraji to Win WBC & WBA Flyweight Titles
Sandoval Dethrones Teraji to Claim Flyweight World Titles in Japan
Ricardo Rafael Sandoval shocked the boxing world by defeating two-weight world champion Kenshiro Teraji to capture the WBC and WBA flyweight world titles in Yokohama, Japan.
The 26-year-old American produced a gutsy performance, climbing off the canvas in round five and going toe-to-toe with Teraji for the remainder of the 12-round contest.
The judges scored the bout a split decision in favour of Sandoval, with cards reading 115-112, 115-112, and 113-114. Despite the narrow margin, there was no protest from the Japanese star.
“I feel amazing. I never thought since I started at 10 years old we would be on this stage,” Sandoval said after the win.
Teraji’s Reign Ends
At 33, Kenshiro Teraji had previously unified titles in both the light-flyweight and flyweight divisions. This was just the second defeat of his professional career, and his first since 2021.
His future now remains uncertain as he contemplates the next chapter following the loss on home soil.
More Drama in Japan: Vargas Holds Title After Draw
In the co-main event, WBA bantamweight world champion Antonio Vargas retained his title following a thrilling draw against Japan’s Daigo Higa.
Higa dropped Vargas in the fourth round, but the American responded with a dramatic knockdown in the final round, salvaging the result with scores level at 113-113.
“It’s not the outcome I wanted. I guess it is a title defence. I wouldn’t mind getting my rematch. I look forward to being back,” said Vargas.
This marks the third failed title attempt at home for Higa, following a draw with Seiya Tsutsumi in February and a points loss to WBO champion Yoshiki Takei last year.
After the bout, former champion Tsutsumi entered the ring to challenge Vargas, raising the possibility of another blockbuster fight.
Takami Delivers for Japan

Takami won his first world title in just his 10th professional fight
There was at least some success for Japanese fans as Kyosuke Takami captured the WBA light-flyweight world title, stopping Erick Rosa in the 10th round.
