Superb Lookman Strike Helps Nigeria Overcome Tanzania 2-1

Fes, Morocco – AFCON 2025 Group C

Nigeria began their quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania, thanks to a sublime finish from Ademola Lookman in wet conditions in Fes.

The Super Eagles controlled much of the first half and took the lead in the 36th minute. Defender Semi Ajayi headed home a pinpoint cross from Alex Iwobi, giving the West Africans a deserved advantage. Shortly before the break, Samuel Chukwueze nearly doubled the lead, but his deflected shot was tipped over by Tanzania keeper Zuberi Foba.

Tanzania struck back shortly after halftime, equalising in the 50th minute through Charles M’Mombwa, who calmly slotted in a delivery from Novatus Miroshi.

However, Nigeria responded swiftly. Just two minutes later, Lookman dazzled with his footwork and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top-right corner, restoring Nigeria’s lead and eventually securing all three points for Eric Chelle’s side.

Despite an offside goal from Victor Osimhen, Nigeria maintained composure to see out the win in front of 11,444 fans. The result brings back memories of 1980, when Nigeria beat Tanzania in their opening game and went on to win their first AFCON title.

The Super Eagles now shift their focus to Tunisia, whom they face next in Group C. Meanwhile, Tanzania will look to rebound in an East African clash against Uganda in Rabat.

With the “Naija 4 the Win” campaign in full swing, Nigeria aims to return to AFCON glory after a 12-year drought, despite the setback of missing out on the 2026 World Cup.
