Could Casemiro Stay at Man Utd? Kleberson Believes Roy Keane-Esque Leadership Still Vital at Old Trafford

For much of this season, it has felt like the final chapter of Casemiro’s time at Manchester United is already written. The club confirmed months ago that the Brazilian midfielder would leave when his contract expires in the summer of 2026, walking away as a free agent after four turbulent years at Old Trafford.

Yet football rarely follows a straight script.

Now, a fresh conversation has emerged about whether Casemiro could still perform a late U-turn and remain in Manchester after all. According to former United midfielder Kleberson, the idea may not be as unrealistic as it initially sounded.

Speaking recently about his fellow Brazilian, Kleberson suggested that Casemiro still feels a strong connection to United — and that his leadership could remain valuable to a squad that is finally beginning to rediscover its direction.

More importantly, he hinted that the midfielder himself may still be thinking about staying.

Casemiro Set to Become a Free Agent in 2026

When Casemiro arrived at Manchester United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, it was one of the most talked-about transfers in European football.

United paid around £60 million to bring in a player who had already built a legendary reputation in Spain. At Real Madrid, Casemiro had been part of one of the most dominant midfields of the modern era, helping the club win multiple major honours — including five UEFA Champions League titles.

The expectation was clear: he would bring stability, experience and leadership to a United team that had been lacking those qualities for several years.

At times, he delivered exactly that.

But the club itself has remained inconsistent, cycling through tactical changes, managerial shifts and squad rebuilds. As a result, Casemiro’s time in England has not been filled with silverware in the same way his Madrid years were.

He has lifted two major trophies with United — the FA Cup and the EFL Cup — but many supporters feel the team never fully reached the level that had originally been envisioned.

When the club confirmed earlier this year that Casemiro would depart at the end of his contract, it appeared to mark the closing of that chapter.

But the story might not be over yet.

Transfer Speculation Already Circling

Since news of his impending departure emerged, speculation about Casemiro’s next move has been constant.

A return to Brazil has been widely discussed, with several major clubs reportedly interested in bringing the experienced midfielder back to his homeland. At 34 years old, he would still represent a significant signing for many sides in the Brazilian top flight.

Another possible destination mentioned in recent months is the Major League Soccer in the United States, where stars like Lionel Messi have helped raise the profile of the league dramatically.

MLS has become a popular option for experienced European players looking for a new challenge late in their careers.

Yet according to Kleberson, there may still be unfinished business at Manchester United.

Kleberson: “I Really Want Him to Stay”

Kleberson, himself a former United player and a member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad, believes Casemiro still has plenty to offer at Old Trafford.

In fact, he thinks the midfielder could comfortably play for another year or two at the highest level.

“I heard a couple of months ago that Casemiro would leave Manchester United,” Kleberson explained.

“A lot of clubs in Brazil have started talking about him. Many of the top teams could use him.”

But despite the interest elsewhere, Kleberson believes Casemiro still feels a strong bond with the club and its supporters.

“I really want him to stay at Manchester United,” he said.

“He understands the passion the club and the fans have. He always works hard and he plays at the level you expect from a Manchester United player.”

Roy Keane-Esque Leadership at Manchester United

Perhaps the most interesting part of Kleberson’s comments relates not to Casemiro’s technical qualities, but to his leadership.

For years, Manchester United was known for having powerful personalities in the dressing room. Players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and of course Roy Keane defined the club’s identity.

They set standards, demanded accountability and drove the team forward during difficult moments.

Kleberson believes Casemiro brings a similar mentality.

“To bring a guy in like him will be very tough,” he said.

“Manchester United used to have a lot of players like that. Now they don’t have as many.”

He stopped short of directly comparing Casemiro to Roy Keane, acknowledging that the legendary Irish captain remains a unique figure in the club’s history.

But the qualities — leadership, professionalism and intensity — are clearly there.

“Casemiro is like that,” Kleberson added.

“He brings that kind of leadership.”

Rediscovering Form at the Right Time

Another factor complicating the situation is Casemiro’s recent performances.

Earlier in his United career, there were moments when injuries and form dips led some supporters to question whether he could still perform at the highest level.

This season, however, he has looked far more like the player who once dominated midfields across Europe.

The Brazilian has already contributed six goals this campaign — an impressive tally for a defensive midfielder — while also providing the defensive stability United often rely upon in big matches.

His resurgence has raised an obvious question: is this really the right moment for the club to let him go?

Kleberson certainly isn’t convinced.

“When he is fit, he is a really good player,” he said.

“He is in good shape and he could still play at a high level for a few more years.”

A Different Experience from Real Madrid

One reason Casemiro’s trophy haul at United looks modest compared to his Real Madrid years is the very different environment he entered.

At Madrid, he played in a stable structure with long-term continuity under experienced leadership. At United, the club has been rebuilding almost constantly.

“The philosophy has changed a lot,” Kleberson explained.

“New managers have come in, players have moved in and out of the club. Everything has been tough and very different from what he experienced at Real Madrid.”

Despite that instability, Casemiro has remained an important figure in the dressing room.

His leadership qualities have also helped him re-establish himself within the Brazil national football team setup, with expectations that he will be part of the squad at the next FIFA World Cup.

Thinking About Staying?

Perhaps the most intriguing suggestion from Kleberson was that Casemiro may not have fully closed the door on staying at United.

“I think he is happy at Manchester United,” he said.

“But the club has never really been in a good position.”

Now, however, things appear to be improving under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Recent performances have been more organised and disciplined, leading some to believe that Carrick could eventually be offered the role permanently.

If that happens, discussions about Casemiro’s future could reopen.

“I still think he would like to stay,” Kleberson said.

“Or at least he is thinking about it.”

The Carrick Factor

Carrick’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain.

For now, he is serving as interim manager while the club evaluates long-term options. But if results continue to improve, the club may decide to keep him in charge beyond the end of the season.

That decision could have a direct impact on Casemiro’s future.

Carrick, himself a former United midfield general, understands the importance of experience and leadership in the centre of the pitch. It would not be surprising if he pushed to keep Casemiro in the squad — even if it meant renegotiating a new contract on reduced terms.

Of course, finances will play a role. Any new deal would almost certainly involve a salary reduction, something Casemiro would need to accept.

But stranger things have happened in football.

An Open Ending

For now, the official line remains unchanged: Casemiro will leave Manchester United at the end of his contract.

Yet the door does not appear completely closed.

Between improved performances, Carrick’s influence and the respect he commands in the dressing room, there are still reasons to believe the story could take an unexpected turn.

Whether that happens or not, one thing is certain: players with Casemiro’s experience and leadership do not come around often.

And if he really is still “thinking about it,” as Kleberson suggests, Manchester United may yet face a very interesting decision before the summer arrives.
