Newey: Aston Martin Take ‘Extreme’ Path With 2026 F1 Car
Newey: “Different Solution to New Rules”
Adrian Newey has described the new Aston Martin Formula 1 car as “one of the more extreme interpretations” of the 2026 aerodynamic regulations, following its highly anticipated but technically troubled launch in Saudi Arabia.
Though the team only revealed its updated livery on a generic 2026 chassis, the actual car is now at Bahrain International Circuit ahead of preseason testing.
“It seems to be a bit different to some of the other solutions out there… Whether it’s the right one or the wrong one, only time will tell.”

Compressed Design, Big Ambitions
-
The car was ready late, missing most of the shakedown test in Spain, only running four laps with Lance Stroll and 60+ with Fernando Alonso.
-
Rivals like Mercedes’ George Russell and Williams’ James Vowles praised the innovative look.
-
Newey noted the compressed design cycle after joining the team in March 2025, saying:
“We pursued a single design direction due to time limits… It’s been invigorating but exhausting.”
Aston’s Big 2026 Picture

As part of the team’s launch programme, a concept car featuring the AMR26 livery was revealed, with the AMR26 set to appear during pre-season testing in Bahrain later this week
-
Honda joins as Aston Martin’s exclusive power unit partner, ending Red Bull’s association.
-
The team also benefits from new infrastructure, including a wind tunnel and driver-in-loop simulator.
-
Adrian Newey’s technical leadership aims to align talent and improve cohesion among engineers.
Familiar Faces, High Stakes
-
Fernando Alonso, entering the final year of his contract at age 45, remains as lead driver alongside Lance Stroll.
-
Alonso:
“I feel the second part of the season will be even more important. I’m focused on car development.”
A Flawed Yet Flashy Launch

Outlook for 2026
Aston Martin targets a leap forward from last year’s P7 finish, with Alonso’s potential swan song and Newey’s influence fueling hopes of a title challenge in coming seasons.
