Queen’s Park Stun Rangers with Historic Scottish Cup Upset | 1-0
Dramatic 97th-Minute Penalty Save Seals Quarter-Final Spot
Second-tier Queen’s Park pulled off one of the biggest shocks in Scottish Cup history, defeating Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Drozd’s Stunner Stuns Ibrox
Despite Rangers dominating possession, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Seb Drozd punished them in the 69th minute, curling a stunning strike past the helpless Jack Butland to give Queen’s Park a shock lead.
Rangers pressed for an equalizer, and it seemed they would salvage the game in the 97th minute when they were awarded a penalty. But captain James Tavernier saw his effort spectacularly saved by Calum Ferrie, sparking wild celebrations.
A Night for the History Books
With this historic victory, Queen’s Park became just the second team in 18 games to win at Ibrox this season, following Olympique Lyonnais.
Neither Celtic nor Tottenham could do it, but Queen’s Park, a club that last lifted the Scottish Cup in 1893, defied the odds to knock out their Glasgow rivals.
Rangers’ Season in Jeopardy
Philippe Clement’s side squandered several first-half opportunities, with Ferrie producing top saves to deny Mohamed Diomande and Vaclav Cerny, while Zach Mauchin cleared an Ianis Hagi effort off the line.
As frustration grew, Rangers were gifted a last-gasp penalty after Cyriel Dessers was brought down in the box. But Tavernier’s miss summed up a dismal night, as Rangers now face the prospect of another trophyless season.
The final whistle was met with boos from the home crowd, as Clement admitted his side “lacked composure” in front of goal.
Davidson’s Tactical Masterclass
Queen’s Park manager Callum Davidson, who famously eliminated Rangers at Ibrox in 2021 en route to Scottish Cup glory with St Johnstone, pulled off another masterclass.
Despite only having four fit defenders, Davidson’s side frustrated Rangers, executed their game plan perfectly, and wrote their names in Scottish football history.
What’s Next?
Queen’s Park advance to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1928.
Rangers must regroup quickly to salvage their season.
