Raducanu Reaches First Semi-Final of 2025 at Washington Open

Emma Raducanu advanced to her first WTA semi-final of the 2025 season after defeating Maria Sakkari 6-4 7-5 at the Washington Open.

The 22-year-old Briton, who had already stunned seventh seed Marta Kostyuk and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, produced another composed performance in sweltering heat to dispatch the 2023 runner-up.

Raducanu overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set, winning five straight games to seal the match in straight sets and keep her title hopes alive in both singles and doubles.

“I’ve been doing a lot of good work… you just have to enjoy suffering and leave it all out there on the court,” Raducanu told Sky Sports.

She will face either Anna Kalinskaya or fourth seed Clara Tauson in the last four as she targets her first WTA final since her 2021 US Open triumph.

Raducanu and Elena Rybakina are also into the women’s doubles semi-finals, where they’ll face second seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai later today.

Despite receiving physio during the second set and feeling “a bit wobbly,” Raducanu says she’s motivated and eager to continue competing:

“It was brutal today… I need to get out of the heat and prepare for doubles.”

Neal Skupski & John-Patrick Smith came from a set down to beat the fourth-seeded pair Michael Venus & Yuki Bhambri 3-6 6-4 10-7 in the men’s doubles quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Fran Jones reached her first WTA semi-final in Palermo, defeating Panna Udvardy 6-2 6-3. She will enter the top 100 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career on Monday.
