Zverev and Medvedev Win Despite Health Scares; Sabalenka Saves Four Match Points

Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev advanced to the semi-finals of the Halle Open despite mid-match health issues, while Aryna Sabalenka pulled off a stunning comeback at the Berlin Open after saving four match points.

Zverev Recovers After Vomiting Mid-Match

World number three Alexander Zverev overcame a sudden bout of sickness to beat Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the quarter-finals in Halle. The German had to sprint off the court during the second game to vomit, visibly struggling upon return.

“I felt fine before the match. Then all of a sudden, I felt really, really bad. I threw up, and 15 minutes later I felt OK again. I’ve never experienced anything like that,” Zverev said.

Despite early sluggishness in long rallies, the 28-year-old gradually regained his rhythm and sealed the match in straight sets. He will now face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Medvedev Battles Through Nosebleed

Former world number one Daniil Medvedev also faced an unusual interruption during his 6-4, 6-3 win over American Alex Michelsen when a nosebleed forced a medical timeout in the second set.

“The shadows on court made conditions difficult. It took time to adjust,” said the 29-year-old, who remains focused on his preparations for Wimbledon, just 10 days away.

Sabalenka Saves Four Match Points in Berlin Thriller

In one of the most dramatic matches of the grass-court season so far, world number one Aryna Sabalenka saved four match points to defeat Elena Rybakina 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) at the Berlin Open.

Down 6-2 in the final-set tiebreak, Sabalenka survived the first match point with a lucky net cord before rattling off five straight points to secure the win.

“It trains your fighting spirit. I’m proud of myself for fighting until the last point,” Sabalenka said after the win.

She will next face Marketa Vondrousova, who comfortably dispatched Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-1 in a rematch of their 2023 Wimbledon final.
