Victor Wembanyama Shines as Spurs Dominate Mavericks in Season Opener

Wembanyama Leads the Way as San Antonio Cruise Past Dallas

The NBA season opened in style as Victor Wembanyama produced a dazzling 40-point performance to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a commanding 125-92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on opening night. It was a statement win — not just for the Spurs, but for the French phenom himself, returning to action after months on the sidelines.

For Wembanyama, this was more than just another game. It was his first regular-season appearance since undergoing surgery in February to address complications from deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. But if there were any concerns about rust or rhythm, they were quickly erased. By halftime, Wembanyama had already poured in 21 points, dominating the paint and the perimeter with equal authority.

The 21-year-old Frenchman — already one of the league’s biggest attractions — reminded everyone exactly why he’s being touted as a generational talent. His fifth career 40-point game came with an efficiency and maturity that belied his age. He moved with grace, played with power, and led with the kind of presence that immediately set the tone for San Antonio’s night.

“This was about sending a message,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after the game. “He’s not just back — he’s better. The time off gave him perspective. He came in hungry, focused, and you could see it from the first quarter.”

The Spurs, rejuvenated by their young core and playing in front of a lively home crowd, looked sharp and fluid on both ends of the floor. They outscored the Mavericks 34-18 in the second quarter and never looked back.

Wembanyama’s Return Dominates the Headlines

What stood out most about Wembanyama’s performance was how effortless it all seemed. Whether driving to the rim, knocking down mid-range jumpers, or protecting the paint, he made the game look simple. His confidence radiated through every possession.

He finished the night with 40 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks, shooting over 60% from the field. Every basket was greeted by cheers that grew louder as the game went on — chants of “MVP” even echoing through the Frost Bank Center.

“I missed this,” Wembanyama told reporters post-game. “Being out there with my teammates, hearing the fans, feeling the energy — it’s what I love. I worked really hard to come back, and I just wanted to enjoy every moment tonight.”

His matchup with Cooper Flagg, Dallas’ highly anticipated rookie, was one of the night’s most intriguing storylines. The contrast could not have been starker.

Flagg, the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, was making his debut at just 18 years old, becoming the second-youngest starter in NBA history behind LeBron James. Expectations were sky-high, but nerves got the better of him early on. He went scoreless in the first half and managed just 10 points by the end, shooting a modest 4-of-13 from the floor.

It was a reminder that even for elite prospects, the NBA can be a brutal learning curve.

“Cooper will be fine,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “He’s got the talent, the work ethic, and the mentality. Nights like this are part of the process.”

Still, on this occasion, the spotlight belonged entirely to Wembanyama.

Spurs Show Promise Beyond Their Star

While Wembanyama’s brilliance stole the show, San Antonio’s collective performance was equally encouraging. Devin Vassell added 19 points, Tre Jones controlled the tempo with poise, and Jeremy Sochan brought relentless defensive energy. The Spurs’ young lineup played with the kind of chemistry that hinted at a team ready to take a leap forward.

The defensive intensity was especially notable. San Antonio held Luka Dončić — the heartbeat of the Mavericks — to just 17 points on an inefficient night. Dončić was visibly frustrated, struggling to find his rhythm against the Spurs’ length and switching defense.

“I thought we did a good job making Luka uncomfortable,” Popovich said. “That’s not easy to do. But the guys stuck to the plan — contested shots, got back in transition, and made him work for everything.”

The Spurs’ 33-point margin of victory was their largest against Dallas in over a decade, sending an early signal that they might no longer be the rebuilding outfit many expected.

Edgecombe Impresses in 76ers’ Nail-Biting Win

Elsewhere on opening night, it was another rookie — VJ Edgecombe — who lit up the box score with a historic debut for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Edgecombe, the rookie guard out of Baylor, exploded for 34 points in Philadelphia’s 117-116 win over the Boston Celtics, marking the third-highest scoring debut in NBA history. Not since Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 43-point debut for the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959 had a newcomer made such an instant impact for a Philly team.

“Man, yeah, that was crazy,” Edgecombe said with a smile after the game. “That surpassed my expectations, to be honest. I just wanted to help the team win — but when I saw those shots falling, I knew it was one of those nights.”

Edgecombe hit six three-pointers and showed poise beyond his years, repeatedly finding gaps in Boston’s defense. His composure in the final minutes — including two clutch free throws — helped seal the win for a Sixers team still finding its rhythm under new coach Nick Nurse.

Joel Embiid, who finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds, was full of praise for the rookie. “He’s fearless,” Embiid said. “He’s got that confidence, that killer instinct. If he keeps that up, he’s going to be special.”

Anunoby Leads Knicks Past Cavs in Mike Brown’s Debut

Meanwhile, in New York, OG Anunoby — the British-born forward who continues to impress — delivered a commanding performance in the Knicks’ 119-111 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Anunoby tallied 24 points and 14 rebounds, setting the tone on both ends of the floor. The win marked a perfect start for Mike Brown on his debut as Knicks head coach.

“OG was outstanding,” Brown said post-game. “He brought energy, leadership, and consistency. That’s exactly what we wanted from him tonight.”

For the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell’s 28 points weren’t enough to prevent a sluggish defensive outing. Cleveland struggled to contain the Knicks’ ball movement, particularly in the second half, as Jalen Brunson (21 points) and Anunoby took control.

A Night of New Beginnings

Opening night of the NBA season often brings surprises, but few could have predicted the storylines that unfolded. Wembanyama’s triumphant return, Edgecombe’s historic debut, and Anunoby’s double-double heroics all painted a picture of a league brimming with emerging talent and fresh narratives.

For Wembanyama and the Spurs, though, this was more than just a win — it was a declaration. After months of anticipation and uncertainty, the young French star reminded everyone that his potential isn’t hype. It’s reality.

“I’m not here to make statements,” Wembanyama said with a quiet smile after the game. “I’m here to play basketball — and have fun doing it.”

If this performance was any indication, he’ll be having plenty of fun this season.
