Vinicius Scores as Real Madrid Fall to Osasuna
Real Madrid suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat to Osasuna despite another goal from Vinicius Jr, handing the initiative in the La Liga title race to Barcelona.
Vinicius continued his strong scoring form with his fifth goal in four matches, but it was not enough to prevent Real’s first league defeat in six games under manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
Osasuna Strike First Through Budimir
The hosts took the lead in the first half through a penalty converted by Ante Budimir.
Although Budimir was initially booked for simulation by referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez, a VAR review showed Thibaut Courtois had stepped on the striker’s foot. The decision was overturned, and Budimir calmly sent Courtois the wrong way from the spot.
Osasuna could have extended their advantage earlier, with Courtois producing a superb one-handed save to deny Budimir before the Croatian striker struck the post with a header.
Vinicius Responds After the Break
Real Madrid improved in the second half, particularly following the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 64th minute.
The England defender quickly influenced the game, creating a chance for Vinicius with a precise cross-field pass. Shortly after, Vinicius converted from Federico Valverde’s low cross to level the match in the 73rd minute — his first away league goal in nearly five months.
Kylian Mbappe thought he had completed the turnaround but was denied by the offside flag.
Late Drama as Garcia Seals Win
Osasuna substitute Raul Garcia appeared to have seen a late goal ruled out for offside in the 90th minute. However, VAR confirmed he was onside, and his clinical finish stood to secure a historic win.
It marked Osasuna’s first league victory over Real Madrid since 2011 and lifted the Pamplona side to ninth in the table.
Title Race Implications
Despite the loss, Real Madrid remain two points clear of Barcelona — but having played a game more.
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona can move top of La Liga with a home victory against Levante on Sunday.
For Real Madrid, the defeat represents a setback at a crucial stage of the season — even as Vinicius continues to deliver on the pitch following an emotionally charged week.
