‘Who Says No to Benfica?’ – Mourinho Confirms Talks Over Manager Role
Jose Mourinho has confirmed he is in Lisbon for talks to become the new Benfica manager, stating bluntly:
“What coach says no to Benfica? Not me.”
The 62-year-old has been out of work for less than a month after parting ways with Fenerbahce on 29 August. Now, Mourinho looks poised to return to the club where his managerial career began in 2000, albeit briefly.
Mourinho Set to Replace Bruno Lage
Bruno Lage was sacked following a shock Champions League home defeat to Qarabag earlier this week, prompting the Benfica board to seek an immediate replacement ahead of a demanding group-stage campaign.
“Benfica officially asked me if I was interested,” Mourinho told reporters at the Lisbon airport.
“I didn’t hesitate. I’d like to take the opportunity.”
From First Steps to Full Circle
-
Mourinho’s first senior managerial job was at Benfica in 2000, where he managed only 10 matches before leaving due to a dispute with the club president.
-
He then led Porto to six trophies in two seasons, including the Champions League in 2004.
-
Since then, Mourinho has taken charge of some of Europe’s biggest clubs:
Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahce.
Benfica Appointment Could Spark High-Stakes Return
If appointed, Mourinho would quickly be back on the big stage:
-
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 30 September
-
Newcastle United away
-
Real Madrid at home
It would mark an emotional return to the Champions League spotlight for the Portuguese tactician, who won the competition with Porto (2004) and Inter Milan (2010).
What They’re Saying
“When I was presented with the opportunity to coach Benfica, I didn’t hesitate.”
— Jose Mourinho
What’s Next?
A formal announcement is expected in the coming days as Benfica and Mourinho finalize terms. Should a deal be completed, it will mark a symbolic homecoming for one of Portugal’s most iconic football figures.
