Harry Wilson has his sights set on a historic first away victory in Belgium as Wales look to claim back-to-back wins in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Craig Bellamy’s side first host Liechtenstein in Cardiff on Friday before a crucial trip to group favourites Belgium in Brussels.
For Wilson, the return to the King Baudouin Stadium brings back memories of his international debut in 2013, when he came on as a 16-year-old — still the youngest male player to represent Wales.
“Six Points is the Aim”
Despite Belgium being the bigger challenge, Wilson insists that the immediate focus is on taking care of business against Liechtenstein:
“International football has shown many times there are no easy games,” said Wilson. “We have to earn the right to beat Liechtenstein first. But of course, six points from this camp is the goal.”
Wales have a surprisingly strong record against Belgium, having lost just two of eight encounters since Wilson’s debut — including their iconic 3-1 victory at Euro 2016.
“To have a record like that against one of the best nations in Europe is incredible,” Wilson added. “Hopefully we can keep that run going.”
Building Momentum Under Bellamy
Wales have gone eight games unbeaten since Craig Bellamy took over as head coach in summer 2024 — their longest undefeated run in recent years.
“It shows what a good team we are,” said Wilson. “The way we’re playing — with and without the ball — suits us. There’s belief in the group.”
Wilson is expected to win his 61st cap against Liechtenstein, continuing his evolution from teenage debutant to team leader.
From Teenage Debut to Team Leader
Wilson made his debut in Belgium as a 16-year-old while at Liverpool, unaware he had just become his country’s youngest senior player.
“I didn’t know about the record at the time. I just wanted to play for my country. But after that, I worked even harder to become a regular,” he said.
His persistence paid off, and he’s now one of Wales’ most experienced and influential players.
Memorable Goal in Belgium
Wilson recalled scoring a brilliant team goal against Belgium during a 2021 World Cup qualifier — played behind closed doors due to COVID-19.
“It was one of our better team goals, and it came against one of their strongest lineups,” he said. “It’s just a shame there were no fans to witness it.”
