Fery Leads British Charge with Stunning Upset on Wimbledon’s Hottest Day
Wimbledon 2025 kicked off with blistering heat and even hotter performances from the home players, as British wildcard Arthur Fery delivered the shock of the day by defeating 20th seed Alexei Popyrin 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-4.
The 22-year-old, who grew up just minutes from the All England Club, called it “the most proud day” of his tennis career.
“It’s great, and hopefully I can keep going and stay healthy for the rest of the year,” Fery said.
British Players Shine on Opening Day
Fery wasn’t the only Brit to deliver on Day 1. In total, 23 British players took part in the men’s and women’s singles — the highest number in 41 years.
