Jacob Bethell Becomes England’s Youngest Men’s Captain

Jacob Bethell Named England’s Youngest Men’s Captain Ahead of Ireland T20

Jacob Bethell, the 21-year-old all-rounder, is set to become England’s youngest ever captain in a men’s international match when he leads the side in the first T20 against Ireland on Wednesday in Malahide.

With regular white-ball skipper Harry Brook and other first-choice players rested, Bethell will guide an under-strength England squad for the three-match series.

Record-Breaking Moment for Bethell

Historic record:

Bethell will break a 135-year-old record held by Monty Bowden, who captained England in 1889 at 23 years and 144 days old.

Though Alfred “Bunny” Lucas captained England aged 20 in an unofficial match in 1877, Bethell’s appointment is the youngest official captaincy for the men’s team in an international fixture.

Bethell told BBC Sport:

“I’ll be very chilled out, try to let everyone relax and let the talent take over.

It’s only a short-term job, but to lead the side is really special.”

“I can learn on the job without too many preconceived ideas.”

Limited Leadership Experience, Big Opportunity

Bethell’s only prior captaincy came with the England Under-19s and Warwickshire’s second XI.

Despite never leading at senior level, the Barbados-born cricketer is approaching the challenge with calm determination.

“It’s something new to me, but I prefer it that way,” he said.

“It’s an incredible opportunity and something I’ll look back on in the future.”

Series vs Ireland – Squad Adjustments

1st T20: Wednesday, Malahide

2nd & 3rd T20s: Later this week

Squad changes:

  • Jordan Cox is expected to slot into the middle order in Brook’s absence

  • Sonny Baker or Scott Currie will replace Jofra Archer in the bowling attack

Bethell made his international debut in 2023 against Australia and has quickly earned the trust of England selectors.

“It shows I’ve got a bit of backing in terms of me as a character, not just me as a cricketer,” Bethell said.

“I’ve loved every minute so far.”

Ashes on the Horizon – But Bethell Staying Focused

The England squad for the upcoming Ashes tour in Australia is set to be revealed next week, and speculation is growing about Bethell’s inclusion – potentially at number three in place of Ollie Pope.

However, Bethell remains grounded:

“My head’s firmly screwed on to this series. The Ashes squad’s not even been selected yet.”

Summary

Jacob Bethell’s captaincy debut marks a significant milestone in English cricket, not just for his age but also for his measured approach and leadership potential.

Though it’s a short-term appointment, the T20 series against Ireland offers Bethell a rare opportunity to showcase his character, leadership, and readiness for a long-term role in England’s cricketing future.
