Wolves Back Vitor Pereira with New Deal Despite Poor Start
Wolves Close to New Contract with Vitor Pereira Despite Four Straight Defeats
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly finalizing a new contract for manager Vitor Pereira, underlining their continued faith in the Portuguese coach despite a winless start to the 2025-26 Premier League season.
Pereira, whose current deal expires at the end of the campaign, is expected to sign a fresh agreement before this weekend’s home fixture against Leeds United—a move that reinforces Wolves’ long-term vision under his leadership.
Poor Start, But Strong Belief
Wolves have lost all four of their opening Premier League games, leaving them at the bottom of the table. If they lose again on Saturday, they could become just the sixth team in Premier League history to start a season with five consecutive defeats.
Despite this, club officials are standing firmly behind Pereira, with Executive Chairman Jeff Shi recently stating that stability and team chemistry are now more important than ever.
“Wolves need stability now—we need a coach to stay here and help us for a long time,” Shi said earlier this month.
“Before Vitor came, the team chemistry had some problems. This year that issue is gone. We have a strong team spirit and a very committed team structure.”
A Look Back: Pereira’s Impact Since December
Pereira joined Wolves last December, replacing Gary O’Neil with the team in the relegation zone. Under his guidance:
-
Wolves finished 16th, avoiding relegation by 17 points.
-
They recorded six straight league wins between March and April.
-
Their last top-flight victory was a 3-0 win over Leicester, ending that run.
Wolves also claimed a 2-1 EFL Cup victory over West Ham in August, providing a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal start to the new campaign.
Stability Over Short-Term Results
The decision to stick with Pereira highlights Wolves’ commitment to long-term planning, even amid pressure from poor early results. The board believes the team has the chemistry, unity, and structure needed to turn things around.
“Every coach needs time and the jigsaw to be made,” said Shi. “If you have the right foundation, you’ll have a strong season. If not, maybe you have a doubt.”
With the contract extension expected soon, Wolves are betting that consistency in the dugout will eventually translate to results on the pitch.
