Russell Feels Ready to Fight for F1 Title After Singapore Win
Russell: “I Feel Ready to Fight for a Championship”
George Russell believes he is finally ready to challenge for a Formula 1 world title after a commanding victory at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver led from pole and fended off both Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to claim his second win of the season, following his Canadian Grand Prix triumph in June.
“I feel more complete, more confident. I know exactly what I need to do in given circumstances,” said Russell.
“I’ve said it for a while — I feel ready to fight for a championship.”
Redemption After 2023 Crash
Russell’s Singapore win comes on the same street circuit where he crashed out of a podium position on the final lap in 2023.
This time, there were no errors.
-
Pole position by 0.182s over Verstappen
-
Led from Turn 1 after Verstappen started on softs
-
Held off Norris, who was stuck behind Verstappen
-
Controlled the pace in changing weather conditions
“When it was raining before the race, I just said: ‘It is what it is’. A few years ago, I’d have been stressed. Now I just feel relaxed.”
Russell’s Growth: “A Very Different Driver”

The Singapore Grand Prix was designated F1’s first ‘heat hazard’ race, with temperatures of 30C and humidity of 72%
Russell attributes his leap forward to maturity and experience.
“I was over-pushing in the past. Now, I’m calmer. That helps.”
He added:
“This weekend has probably been my most dominant in Formula 1.”
Mercedes will now analyze why performance was so strong after a run of underwhelming results and increasing pressure from Ferrari and McLaren in the constructors’ standings.
Contract Talks Nearing Completion
Russell’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the season, and earlier doubts over his future arose as Toto Wolff chased Max Verstappen for 2026.
However, with Verstappen reaffirming his commitment to Red Bull, a Russell extension is now expected within weeks, possibly ahead of the United States Grand Prix (October 17-19).
Wolff: “He’s been formidable this year. I haven’t seen mistakes.”
“Good things take a while. It’s about the detail, not the big topics.”
