Edwards and O’Neil on Wolves Shortlist After Pereira Sacking

Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun their search for a new head coach following the sacking of Vitor Pereira, with Rob Edwards and Gary O’Neil emerging as early candidates.

Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after Wolves extended their winless run to 10 Premier League games, culminating in a 3-0 defeat to Fulham that left them bottom of the table with just two points from 10 matches.

Rob Edwards: A Popular Return?

  • Current Middlesbrough manager, Rob Edwards, is one of the frontrunners.

  • He made over 100 appearances for Wolves as a player and previously served as a first-team coach at Molineux.

  • Though under contract at Boro, Edwards is said to have boardroom backing at Wolves.

  • The 42-year-old has earned plaudits for his recent work at Luton and now Middlesbrough, though no contact has been made yet with Boro.

Gary O’Neil: Surprise Option

  • O’Neil, also 42, is currently out of work, having been sacked by Wolves in December 2024.

  • The ex-West Ham midfielder was briefly in charge at Molineux before making way for Pereira.

  • Despite his short-lived first stint, he’s now a shock name back in the frame – possibly due to no compensation being required to hire him.

Other Candidates: Michael Carrick Linked

  • Michael Carrick, formerly of Middlesbrough, is also understood to be under consideration.

  • The former Manchester United midfielder is currently unattached and would be available immediately.

  • As of now, no formal approach has been made to any candidate.

Wolves’ Situation: Rock Bottom

  • Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham was their eighth league loss of the season.

  • Wolves are eight points adrift of safety, with Burnley currently 17th.

  • Pereira, who signed a new three-year deal in September, lasted just 10 months after arriving in December 2024.

Vitor Pereira’s Farewell Message:

“It has been a privilege to manage Wolverhampton Wanderers and experience unique moments with this club and its supporters… I wish the club all the best for the rest of the season.”

What’s Next for Wolves?

  • The club will be looking to appoint a new head coach swiftly ahead of their crucial fixtures against Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

  • Wolves fans are demanding clarity as the board weighs stability versus risk in their next managerial appointment.
