PSG Win Intercontinental Cup as Safonov Saves Four Penalties

Paris Saint-Germain secured their sixth trophy of 2025 by beating Flamengo 2-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Intercontinental Cup final held in Qatar. The hero of the night was new signing Matvey Safonov, who produced an astonishing performance in the shootout, saving four consecutive penalties.

Match Summary: Kvaratskhelia & Jorginho on Target

In a tightly contested final at Ali Stadium, PSG took the lead in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia tapped in Desire Doue’s low cross at the back post.

Brazilian giants Flamengo equalized through a Jorginho penalty in the 62nd minute, awarded after Giorgian De Arrascaeta was brought down by Marquinhos.

Despite the introduction of FIFA Best Player of the Year Ousmane Dembele late in the game, PSG couldn’t break the deadlock in extra time, and the match was settled via penalties.

Safonov the Shootout King

The penalty shootout belonged to Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, who denied:

  • Saul Niguez

  • Pedro

  • Leo Pereira

  • Luiz Araujo

PSG converted just two penalties through Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, but Safonov’s brilliance was enough to secure a 2-1 shootout win.
