Sabalenka Falls to Kyrgios in Lackluster Battle of the Sexes

Sabalenka Beaten by Kyrgios in Flat ‘Battle of the Sexes’ in Dubai

Aryna Sabalenka, the current women’s world number one, was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Nick Kyrgios in a much-anticipated exhibition match in Dubai, promoted as a Battle of the Sexes-style showdown — but the match ultimately lacked the fire and intensity promised during its promotion.

Despite the hype, the encounter felt more like a light-hearted pre-season exhibition than the dramatic tennis spectacle fans were led to expect.

Exhibition Without Edge

Both players leaned heavily into the marketing in the lead-up:

  • Sabalenka, 27, said she would “kick Nick’s ass” on US talk shows.

  • Kyrgios, 30, promised it would draw new audiences to tennis.

But on court, the energy was muted, with Kyrgios cruising through the straight-sets win in just over an hour.

Sabalenka showed flashes of her typical fire, smiling mischievously after winning points and engaging with the crowd. However, the match never felt like a true battle — more of a casual sparring session between friends.

“I felt great… He got really tired,” said Sabalenka post-match, jokingly.

“Next time, I already know his tactics.”

Kyrgios’ Comeback Begins

Now ranked 671st due to a string of career-threatening injuries, Kyrgios used this match as part of his fitness comeback plan for 2026.

The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up played with limited movement, often shortening points to avoid physical stress. Nevertheless, he delivered enough firepower to comfortably win the match.

“It was a really tough match,” Kyrgios said with a grin.

“She’s a hell of a player and such a great champion.”

Their chemistry was evident throughout, with both players sharing laughs and friendly moments during and after the match.

Off-Court Spotlight

The decision to cast Kyrgios in this role brought criticism:

  • He has faced past controversy, including an assault admission in 2021 and public misogynistic comments.

  • Critics questioned whether he was the right male counterpart for such a gender-themed event.

Despite this, the event proceeded smoothly, albeit lacking the drama and competitive fire fans expected.

Friendship Over Fierce Rivalry

The duo hugged warmly at the net, ending what was more a celebration of tennis personalities than a clash of champions.

While Sabalenka hinted at a rematch in the future, the event will be remembered more for what it promised than what it delivered.

What’s Next?

  • Nick Kyrgios continues his path toward full recovery and eyes a return to the ATP Tour in 2026.

  • Aryna Sabalenka resumes preparations for the 2025 WTA season, where she remains a Grand Slam favorite.
