Fury Eyes 2026 Comeback, but No Deal Finalized Yet
Tyson Fury has signaled his return to the boxing ring in 2026, but no official deal or opponent has been confirmed, BBC Sport reports.
The 37-year-old British heavyweight, who last fought in December 2024, took to Instagram on Sunday to say:
“2026 is that year. Been away for a while but I’m back now.”
However, sources close to Fury say the post was premature, and key logistical and financial details remain unresolved, including the fight date, opponent, and location.
Fury’s Last Fights and Retirement
Fury hasn’t fought since suffering back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, who now holds the WBA (Super), WBC, and IBF heavyweight titles.
Following the second loss, Fury announced his retirement from boxing in January 2025. His new comeback announcement is his second return from retirement.
Saudi Influence & Joshua Roadblocks
Much of Fury’s return hinges on the financial involvement of Saudi Arabia, a key player in recent global boxing events through the Riyadh Season initiative.
There had been tentative plans for Fury and long-time rival Anthony Joshua to each take a fight in early 2026, leading to a mega-clash later in the year.
However, Joshua’s recent car accident in Nigeria, which tragically killed two of his friends, has cast doubt on his short-term return.
Further complicating matters:
-
Saudi Arabia’s future boxing priorities are uncertain, especially with Turki Alalshikh now focusing on Zuffa Boxing, a new venture with UFC’s Dana White.
-
Zuffa Boxing’s first event is scheduled for late January, drawing attention and financial backing away from traditional bouts.
Possible Opponents: Makhmudov or Wardley?
If a deal is secured, potential opponents for Fury could include:
-
Arslanbek Makhmudov, a powerful Russian heavyweight
-
Fabio Wardley, the rising British WBO champion under Queensberry Promotions
A third fight against Usyk seems unlikely, with fans showing little appetite and Usyk reportedly eyeing a defense against Deontay Wilder instead.
Fury’s Comeback – A Familiar Cycle?
Fury has retired and un-retired multiple times in his career, often announcing returns before finalizing terms. His camp insists nothing is official yet, but the Instagram post has reignited global speculation.
