Usyk Defends Decision to Fight Verhoeven
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has strongly defended his controversial decision to face kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven in a WBC title fight on 23 May in Egypt.
The bout, set to take place near the iconic Pyramids of Giza, has sparked widespread debate within the boxing community due to Verhoeven’s limited professional boxing experience.
Usyk: “I Want to Do What I Want”
Speaking at a press conference, Usyk made it clear that the decision was personal, especially at this stage of his career.
“For once, I want to do what I want—not what others expect,” Usyk said. “For many years I fought who people told me to fight. Now I choose my own challenge.”
The Ukrainian remains one of boxing’s most decorated fighters, boasting an unbeaten record and achievements that include undisputed titles at both cruiserweight and heavyweight levels.
Criticism Over Mismatch Concerns
The fight has been widely labelled a mismatch.
Verhoeven, 37, has only one professional boxing bout—dating back to 2014—despite a highly successful kickboxing career. In contrast, Usyk, 39, is an Olympic gold medallist and undefeated in 24 professional fights.
Critics have questioned why the World Boxing Council (WBC) approved the contest as a title defence, especially after previously refusing to sanction Tyson Fury’s fight with Francis Ngannou in a similar scenario.
The decision has also delayed a mandatory title shot for Agit Kabayel, raising further concerns about fairness in the heavyweight division.
Verhoeven Confident Ahead of Fight
Despite the criticism, Verhoeven remains confident.
“There is a weight difference. I am a natural heavyweight,” he said. “If I land clean, he will go down.”
The Dutch fighter revealed that actor Jason Statham played a role in helping secure the opportunity.
What Comes Next for Usyk?
Usyk hinted that future plans could include a bout against the winner of Fabio Wardley vs Daniel Dubois, followed by a potential trilogy fight with Tyson Fury.
Interestingly, he also backed Anthony Joshua to become the next undisputed heavyweight champion, adding another layer of intrigue to the division.
Controversy Surrounding WBC Decision
The WBC initially declined to sanction the fight but later reversed its stance, calling it a voluntary defence.
This move has drawn criticism from fans and analysts, who argue it undermines the integrity of rankings by allowing a non-ranked fighter to compete for a world title.
