Bayern Munich Fight Back From 3-0 Down to Beat Mainz 4-3
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich produced a sensational second-half comeback from three goals down to defeat Mainz 05 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.
Vincent Kompany’s side trailed 3-0 at half-time after the Bayern manager made nine changes to his starting XI following the German Cup semi-final victory over Bayer Leverkusen. With the Bundesliga title already secured and a UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain approaching, Bayern rotated heavily.
However, second-half substitutions changed the game as Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala all played major roles in an extraordinary turnaround.
Mainz made a flying start and took the lead in the 15th minute when Dominik Kohr volleyed home from Kaishu Sano’s cross. Paul Nebel doubled the advantage after converting the rebound from Nadiem Amiri’s saved effort.
Sheraldo Becker then made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time after Amiri’s powerful strike was tipped onto the crossbar by Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
With Bayern heading towards only their second league defeat of the season, the champions responded strongly after the break.
Nicolas Jackson sparked the comeback seven minutes into the second half when he turned in Konrad Laimer’s delivery.
Former Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise then scored a brilliant solo goal in the 73rd minute, cutting inside before curling a superb finish into the top corner.
Olise was also involved in Bayern’s equaliser, delivering the ball into the area for Jamal Musiala, who bundled home to make it 3-3 with 10 minutes remaining.
Harry Kane completed the comeback in the 83rd minute after Musiala’s cross was pushed into his path by Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz, allowing the England captain to finish from close range.
The victory underlined Bayern’s depth and fighting spirit ahead of their Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.
For Mainz, defeat means they must wait to confirm Bundesliga survival. They remain eight points above the relegation zone with three matches left this season.
